The Premier Healthcare Alliance is a process improvement alliance in approximately 2,900 US community hospitals and 100,000 alternate sites that are looking to transform healthcare through collaboration with IBM technology. Analytics plays a major role in their ability to support such a massive amount of patient information. All decisions made are data driven and evidence based and the ability to oversee best practices and identify new opportunities is critical to remain a leader within the healthcare industry. (as of August 2013)
In order for Premier Healthcare to fulfill their mission of improving the health of “communities” it is vital that they have the ability to aggregate patient data so their members can use this information in a meaningful way. Their members want to see where they stand in the industry, understand who the best performers are, how they can improve their patient care.
Premier’s users need the ability to run big scale data analytics daily to gain insight into how their organizations are performing using the data sets that Premier has established. They’re continuing to looking for new opportunities for improvement as well as learning from other members who they may want to collaborate with. So the constant refresh of the data set made available is critical for members to gain the most insight possible.
“Premier Healthcare Alliance selected PureData Systems for Analytics for many reasons, but the primary reason is the faster query execution time. The reality is just that everyone wants to get the data back as quick as possible. It’s an instant gratification society where you’re used to Google speed. When you ask your question you want a response and that’s true on your analytics as well – the only way we could achieve that was with the PureData System for Analytics. ”, says Todd Wilkes, VP for Enterprise Solution Development
To maintain the largest clinical database in the US, Premier Healthcare Alliance needed an analytic solution to better manage their 2.5 million daily transactions. With the IBM PureData System, they achieved exponential improvements in query processing to ensure better and faster patient care.

Premier Healthcare Alliance is a process improvement alliance in more than 2,700 US hospitals and 90,000 other sites.
We also maintain the nation’s largest clinical, financial and outcomes-based database in the nation with information on one in four patient discharges.
We have $43 billion worth of annual purchasing volume that’s coming in. We’re also bringing clinical messages. We bring in 2.5 million transactions daily as well as we’re getting weekly and monthly and quarterly feeds.
The Premier Membership uses our big data analytics daily. They are out looking to see how they’re performing against their base lines, how they’re driving best practices within their local communities and how they might be able to bring that content and that information back to their local community to continue to improve healthcare.
Premier Healthcare Alliance has benefited from PureData System for Analytics in four ways. It’s simpler administration, faster query response time, faster load times and as well as in-database analytics.
From a systems administration standpoint there’s less bells and whistles to mess with.
And we have the in-database analytics traditionally you would run your queries, and do those analytics in that mid tier. Very expensive to move the data back and forth. So, within database analytics, we’re able to do those analytics inside the appliance, take advantage of the MPP architecture, resolve the query there and then bring that result set back to the user so they can look at their analytics and decide what they need to do next.
And then from there, you’re able to resolve all the queries that you would want to, that you’re able to take advantage of that from a load perspective to get it set up for the query execution time.
But the primary reason is the faster query execution time.
From a query execution standpoint, the results come back much faster. Things that used to take minutes, hours, days may be not come back at all are coming back in minutes and seconds.
The reality is just that everyone wants to get the data back as quick as possible. It’s an instant gratification society where you’re used to Google speed. When you ask your question you want a response and that’s true on your analytics as well.
And so, folks who are impatient, they’re not going to want to wait. They want to see their content. They want to see their results back as quickly as possible. And the only way we could achieve that was with the PureData System for Analytics.
