Overview

A financial institution specializing in loans to midsize and large companies in Brazil, Banco ABC Brasil is one of the few Brazilian banks controlled by foreign shareholders. The controlling shareholder, Arab Banking Corporation, is headquartered in Bahrain and operates directly or through subsidiaries in 21 countries.

Business need:
Over the past four years, Banco ABC Brasil had seen an astonishing 40–50 percent growth rate. Hampered by an antiquated IT infrastructure, the institution was having difficulty meeting increased customer and marketplace demand. Its exponential growth had contributed to a wealth of critical business data that needed to be stored and accessed quickly and securely. At the same time, the bank was having difficulty meeting the regulatory compliance requirements for financial institutions in Brazil.

Solution:
The new environment was built on two IBM BladeCenter® H chassis that contained 13 IBM BladeCenter HS21 servers, configured as VMware servers and deployed to run the bank’s critical core business applications. An IBM System Storage™ N3600 server, supported by an IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library solution for backup and connected to the servers by IBM System Storage SAN switches. The storage environment is managed and protected by IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager software.

Benefits:
• Improves performance, scalability and security, as well as storage of critical business data • Meets regulatory compliance requirements for Brazilian financial institutions • Achieves cost savings from space, cooling and energy reductions in a “greener” IT environment
