— Ray Cross, PhD, president, Morrisville State College

Part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, Morrisville State College is a four-year institution offering more than 75 degree programs. It has a national reputation for pioneering the integration of advanced technology into everyday campus life.

Challenge
As the first step in better meeting the increased performance and mobility demands made by the proliferation of wireless devices and bandwidth-intensive applications on campus, the college launched a review of its wireless options. When its current wireless network components were determined to be outdated, the college accelerated the search to find a fast 802.11n solution, which not only would meet its current requirements but also would provide optimum support for the next generation of classroom and student computing access, devices and wireless applications.

Solution
After evaluating multiple vendors on ease-of-use and performance, the college selected IBM Global Technology Services and IBM Business Partner Meru Networks to design and deploy a large-scale wireless network that delivers world-class speed. Following site survey and network design, IBM and Meru provided network solution deployment (including removing old access points and installing new wiring and new access points) and testing for more than 800 new access points, each equipped with two a/b/g/n radios to support technologies based on the IEEE 802.11n standard. Leveraging Meru’s unique channel layering radio frequency design, the network supports dedicated channels for the new 802.11n clients and is backward compatible with the college’s existing 802.11b and 802.11g clients. IBM also provided network and end-user support after project completion.

Benefits
Improves classroom connectivity from DSL-level to Ethernet-level for faster, more reliable performance
Helps the college retain its next generation technology leadership, aiding student and staff recruitment
