"With the new RFID framework provided by IBM we are finally able to capture the shipping data we need to refine our process and get product to our customers quickly." - Ringnes
Customer:
Ringnes

Consumer Products
Deployment country:
Norway
Solution:
Business-to-Business, RFID
IBM Business Partner:
Intermec Technologies
Overview
Founded in 1876, Ringnes is one of the largest brewers in Norway and a subsidiary of the Carlsberg Group. In addition to its own, alcoholic offerings, Ringnes is also the sole bottler and distributor of PepsiCo beverages in Norway.
Business need:
Ringnes lacked a comprehensive logistics solution for tracking its large shipping volumes. The company was managing its inventories manually, so it didn’t always have a clear picture of how much product was being distributed and where those shipments were in the distribution process. Ringnes sought a solution that would provide the logistics data it needed to manage its inventories, coordinate its loading procedures and improve its efficiency.
Solution:
The IBM team deployed IF5 Fixed radio frequency identification (RFID) readers from IBM Business Partner Intermec Technologies at the docks, and equipped the shipping containers with Intermec Small Rigid RFID tags. They use IBM WebSphere® Premises Server software to track and register the loading and unloading of products. Inventory processes are monitored using reports generated by IBM DB2® Alphablox® software. Both the WebSphere and DB2 applications are hosted on a new IBM System x3550 server.
Benefits:
• Optimizes logistics processes, driving improved staff efficiency
• Provides valuable shipping and inventory data
• Coordinates the loading and unloading of transport vehicles, helping to get product on store shelves more quickly

Founded in 1876, Ringnes is one of the largest brewers in Norway and a subsidiary of the Carlsberg Group. In addition to its own, alcoholic offerings, Ringnes is also the sole bottler and distributor of PepsiCo beverages in Norway.
Challenge
Ringnes lacked a comprehensive logistics solution for tracking its large shipping volumes. The company was managing its inventories manually, so it didn’t always
have a clear picture of how much product was being distributed and where those shipments were in the distribution process. Ringnes sought a solution that would
provide the logistics data it needed to manage its inventories, coordinate its loading procedures and improve its efficiency.
Solution
Ringnes worked with IBM Global Technology Services to deploy an automated product management solution. The IBM team deployed IF5 Fixed radio frequency
identification (RFID) readers from IBM Business Partner Intermec Technologies at the client’s loading docks, and the IBM team equipped the client’s shipping containers with Intermec Small Rigid RFID tags that transmit the contents of each unit marked for transport. Ringnes uses IBM WebSphere® Premises Server software to automatically track and register the loading and unloading of products from the company’s fleet of trucks. As shipping containers pass through the facility’s loading docks, the RFID tag transmits data about the contents of the container to the company’s inventory system. Inventory processes are monitored using reports generated by IBM DB2® Alphablox® software. Both the WebSphere and DB2 applications are hosted on a new IBM System x3550 server.
Benefits
• Optimizes logistics processes, driving improved staff efficiency
• Provides valuable shipping and inventory data
• Coordinates the loading and unloading of transport vehicles, helping
to get product on store shelves more quickly
