BNSF Railway is one of North America’s leading freight transportation companies, with a rail network of 32,000 route miles in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. The railway is one of the largest Class I freight railroads in the United States—transporting everything from agricultural and consumer products to industrial products and coal.
BNSF Railway personnel require continuous access to data to determine how to increase operational efficiency, confirm shipments arrive on time and improve overall performance.
BNSF selected IBM® DB2® pureScale® software as its strategic database platform for more than 400 business-critical OLTP applications. The software’s built-in clustering technology enables the railway to optimize the performance and efficiency of its data driven services. As BNSF deploys DB2 pureScale database software, the IBM PureData™ System for Transactions platform has a potential to help customers implement IBM DB2 PureScale much quicker, much faster than what they currently can deploy today because it’s a centerpiece of that appliance.
● Achieved 99.999 data reliability for OLTP applications ● Anticipated 90 percent reduction in number of database servers ● Projected to reduce database server expenses by 135 percent
Facing growing complexity in their transportation data, BNSF Railroad turned to IBM PureData System for Transactions for their solution. With this pre-architected system, BNSF expects to reduce their implementation time and better serve their customers.
Kent Collins, BNSF
At BNSF, the data services area is the cornerstone of what we do with the railroad. The value of data can’t be overstated.
IBM’s PureData for transactions has a potential to help customers implement IBM DB2 PureScale much quicker, much faster than what they currently can deploy today because it’s a centerpiece of that appliance.
We can see the value and understand the value in time to build, time to deploy, time to integrate. We see that value because the number of servers you have to build, the environments you have to set up, the knowledge and understanding you have to know in order to get them cabled and operating properly; if that could come pre-architected, pre-designed in a box then the length of time it would take from purchase to value would be much shorter and so the entire PureSystem, PureApplication, PureData stack, that's the value added proposition that it gives that’s important to all businesses I would think that the ability to get those solutions out and on the floor and operating quicker with less risk seems to me to be the value proposition that the IBM PureSystem, PureData offers.
