"Cloning our production systems to deploy software previously took days. With z/OSMF it is much easier, and can be completed in a matter of a few hours. Though this is only an occasional requirement, this feature provides us with essential system resilience. In the nuclear industry, this is a strong benefit." - Paulo César do Nascimento, Senior Support Analyst for z/OS and SAP, Eletrobrás Termonuclear (Eletronuclear)

Eletrobrás, the largest generator and supplier of electricity in Latin America, is majority-owned by the Brazilian federal government and generates some 37 percent of the country's power supply.
For safety and security reasons, Brazilian nuclear power generator Eletrobrás Termonuclear wanted to enhance systems resilience and improve operational efficiency.
Eletrobrás implemented IBM® z/OS® version 1.13 including the z/OS Management Facility and FlashCopy® functionality alongside IBM DB2® version 9, supporting SAP applications hosted on x86-architecture servers.
z/OS Management Facility simplifies administration tasks and improves business efficiency; z/OS 1.13 is highly available, safe and easy to manage; FlashCopy cuts data backup time to effectively zero.
Eletrobrás, the largest generator and supplier of electricity in Latin America, is majority-owned by the Brazilian federal government and generates some 37 percent of the country's power supply. Eletrobrás is active throughout Latin America and in several African countries, generates around 40,000 MW and operates 60,000 km of transmission lines. Subsidiary Eletrobrás Termonuclear SA (operating as Eletronuclear) operates two nuclear power plants in Brazil, and is building a third. With national plans to build nuclear power plants across the country, Eletronuclear is set to expand significantly.
Eletronuclear runs its SAP database on System z®, supported by IBM DB2 on z/OS. The company chose IBM System z9® Business Class servers for the database workload, both for the very high transaction throughput capabilities and for the security and reliability features – essential in the nuclear industry. Data is stored on IBM System Storage DS8000 family devices, with data backup to an IBM TotalStorage 3494 Tape Library.
For data security and system resilience, Eletronuclear was running daily backups, during which operations were suspended for around five hours. To protect against system outage, Eletronuclear tested new software deployments on cloned copies of the production environment, a process that took several days.
For safety and security reasons, Eletronuclear wanted to enhance systems resilience and improve operational efficiency. The company looked for ways to reduce the number of system outages and improve its technical testing capabilities. The aims were to complete tests more rapidly and to run tests without impact on the production systems. To do so, Eletronuclear introduced abilities such as production environment backup online and z/OSMF cloning.
Working closely with IBM, Eletronuclear took the opportunity to join the IBM z/OS Early Support Program (ESP), upgrading to z/OS 1.13, which includes the groundbreaking z/OS Management Facility. The combination of the extended functionality and enhanced system productivity features immediately addressed Eletronuclear’s needs for improved system resilience and increased business productivity.
IBM z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF) provides a web-browser based management console for z/OS, enabling more productive day-to-day operations and ease of administration. More than just a graphical user interface, z/OSMF provides an intelligent management console to help reduce the learning curve and improve productivity for management and configuration, with automated tasks, embedded active user assistance and simplified operations
z/OSMF simplifies the execution of new management tasks and enhances existing tasks, for example, providing accelerated software deployment through the rapid cloning of z/OS images. It includes powerful TCP/IP network and security configuration, as well as z/OS and Linux workload server resource monitoring, all from a single point of control.
Additionally, z/OSMF Incident Log enables the team to identify and solve problems rapidly and efficiently by providing online access to relevant documentation with fast and simple delivery to the IBM technical teams. Further detailed system indicators can be accessed using z/OSMF, allowing support staff to optimize performance from within the single browser-based environment.
Paulo César do Nascimento, Senior Support Analyst for z/OS and SAP at Eletronuclear, reports, “z/OS with the integrated Management Facility provides a greatly simplified interface that has improved our productivity, and the underlying functionality has had an immediate, positive effect on our capabilities.
“Cloning our production systems to deploy software previously took days. With z/OSMF it is much easier, and can be completed in a matter of a few hours. Though this is only an occasional requirement, this feature provides us with essential system resilience. In the nuclear industry, this is a strong benefit.”
Similarly, z/OS offers improved backup services through z/OS Data Facility Storage Management System services. Backup copies no longer need to be directed to identical hard disks, and can be completed on any drive with sufficient free space, which optimizes use of available storage investments at Eletronuclear. The z/OS Data Facility Storage Management System also enables automated tape backup from disk backup, reducing the manual workload for busy technical teams.
“Integrated z/OS and DB2 FlashCopy is one of the main advantages of z/OS,” says Paulo César do Nascimento. “In the past, a full backup of the database required five hours of production downtime as we paused the database. We are trying out IBM DB2 version 9, which supports the FlashCopy feature of z/OS, and this enables a complete backup of the full database even during operations, a significant productivity advantage.”
Eletronuclear runs its database workload on special-purpose System z Integrated Information Processors (zIIPs), which reduces the software license costs by placing the processing workload on the most cost-efficient platform.
Lower risk, higher productivity
As a nuclear power generator, Eletronuclear depends on total system reliability and resilience. The enhancements available in z/OS provide the ability to back up and clone systems significantly faster than before, greatly reducing business risk and increasing productivity.
Paulo César do Nascimento concludes, “Eletronuclear has an excellent relationship with IBM and continues to be very satisfied with the integrated IBM System z, z/OS and DB2 platform for our SAP applications, which are fundamental to our business.”
