Case Study

Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH provides IT services to government ministries and universities across Austria. Its 1,200 employees manage more than 30,000 workstations across 1,200 locations. The company achieved revenues of EUR 265.3 million (USD 352.5 million) in 2012.

Since Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH was spun off from the Austrian finance ministry in 1997, it has achieved huge success in winning many other government ministries and publicly-owned organizations as clients. The number of users relying on the company’s IT infrastructure increased rapidly, and Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH began providing additional applications to support the needs of a more diverse customer base; both of these factors put pressure on its existing IT infrastructure.

Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH realized that it needed to upgrade its IT infrastructure to keep pace with company growth. At the same time, the company needed to secure low operational costs for the long term to remain competitive . The company engaged Huemer iT Solution, an IBM Premier Business Partner, to find a solution.

Leveraging a virtualized solution from IBM
Based on Huemer IT Solution’s recommendations, Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH decided to replace its previous IT environment of Sun Solaris servers with a virtualized solution based on IBM Power Systems servers running the IBM AIX operating system, and migrate its SAP applications to the new platform.

Wolfgang Danzinger, Head of the Department of Infrastructure Shared Services at Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH, comments, “Huemer iT Solution provided us with excellent support throughout the project, helping us to complete the system set-up and data migration quickly and easily.”

Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH operates 18 IBM Power® 750 servers – six of which host SAP applications – as well as two IBM Power 740 and two IBM Power 720 servers. All of the Power Systems servers are based on high-performance POWER7 processors.

Virtualized with IBM PowerVM technology, the IBM Power Systems environment supports a total of 180 virtual servers, which the company uses to provide SAP and other custom software – such as a student enrollment application for universities – to its customers via a private cloud.

Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH runs one of the largest SAP installations in Europe on the Oracle database on IBM Power Systems servers, devoting 192 CPUs for databases und 288 CPUs for applications. The company provides applications for human resources and finance to 20,000 users, including 12,000 concurrent users.

Wolfgang Danzinger explains, “Virtualization enables us to massively accelerate provisioning of new applications to our customers. In the past, it took up to eight weeks to set up a physical server and the relevant applications; now we can provision new or additional virtual servers in just four hours! This hugely boosts our flexibility and ability to satisfy new user needs.”

Coping with seasonal fluctuations
The IBM Power Systems servers include the Capacity on Demand feature, which enables Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH to activate dormant processor and memory resources without incurring downtime, helping the company to cope with huge seasonal variations in its workload without having to deploy additional physical servers. This equips the company to cope with the peaks in workload that occur when, for example, the finance ministry completes tax equalization calculations at the beginning of each year; or universities enroll students at the beginning of each semester.

Meeting challenging SLAs
The IBM Power Systems servers are distributed between two data centers, with data mirrored between the sites to reduce the risk of outages in a disaster scenario. The systems provide an extremely reliable platform for the SAP applications, which are essential for the day-to-day functioning of the government ministries.

Wolfgang Danzinger remarks, “We migrated our SAP applications to the IBM Power platform one year ago, and we haven’t incurred a single outage since then. We must provide 99.9 percent system availability to meet the SLAs agreed with our customers, so IBM Power Systems is the ideal platform to deliver the reliability that is so vital to our business.”

Improving customer service
Wolfgang Danzinger says, “We now provide services to an increasingly diverse range of organizations, and we often receive customer requests for new services that our clients need to support the specific operations of their businesses. With IBM Power Systems servers, we can deploy new applications quickly to support our diversified customer base, and scale up our systems to support increasing user numbers.

“At the same time, we have improved customer service, as migrating to the IBM Power Systems platform cut response times for some applications by up to 70 percent, and in some instances has reduced costs while maintaining the same service levels.”

Unlocking long-term cost savings
The IBM servers have proved much easier to maintain than the company’s previous solution, enabling Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH to support a rapidly increasing number of workstations and public bodies in the future without having to hire additional IT staff. Moving to a virtualized and highly automated solution helps to keep operational costs low.

“The IBM Power Systems servers are extremely efficient, enabling us to support a larger user base and cut energy costs by 30 percent at the same time,” says Wolfgang Danzinger.

He concludes: “The IBM solution has equipped our company with the power and flexibility we need to meet current and future customer demands, removing barriers to corporate growth and unlocking long-term cost savings.”
