highQ Computerlösungen GmbH, headquartered in Freiburg, Germany, develops IT solutions focused on public transport, on the financial services industries, and on quality monitoring. IBM SmartCloud Enterprise is a crucial part of the solutions, especially of the award-winning e-ticketing application. highQ provides a complete software-as-a-service solution, so clients do not need to invest in infrastructure.

Christophe Fondrier, Business Development and Partner Management Director at highQ Computerlösungen GmbH, explains, “We were offering our software-as-a-service applications running on servers in our own data center. When we talked to clients, we realized that we need to find a way to provide our applications at more competitive prices, which would help us to convince new clients and grow the business.”

highQ knew that Cloud computing could offer the best way forwards, and selected the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise offering as the best match to its needs. Thomas Hornig, CEO at highQ Computerlösungen GmbH, explains, “Our public transport clients are hard to please. They require consistently good service quality to operate their networks without delays. We required extreme scalability, to increase capacity on short notice by a factor of 40 or even 100 as needed.

“IBM SmartCloud Enterprise matches our unique requirements very well. With IBM, we found a reliable and competent partner with many years of experience in operating servers and applications efficiently, and to the highest international quality and security standards. Services based on the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise are trusted by our clients, because it is backed by one of the leading technology companies in the world, giving us great confidence that this is the right choice for highQ.”

IBM SmartCloud Enterprise an enterprise-class public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) solution by IBM, delivering a scalable, hosted IT infrastructure with on-demand access to virtual server and storage resources and, by complying with relevant guidelines, very high security. The IBM cloud solution is based on standard virtualization technology, which enables seamless interoperability in complex environments. Planning, design, implementation and operation of the IBM SmartCloud services including IBM SmartCloud Enterprise are certified according to ISO27001.

The IBM SmartCloud Enterprise is operated at the state-of-the-art green IBM data center in Ehningen, Germany. The location was important to highQ, as the company handles sensitive personal data that must, by law, be processed within national borders. Should highQ choose to provide similar services to clients outside Germany in the future, the company will decide which IBM data centers worldwide will be used to operate the cloud.

SmartCloud solution enables economic, fast scalability and innovative offerings
highQ worked with IBM Global Technology Services® to transition from the in-house servers to the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise service. In the process, the company eliminated investment costs for IT infrastructure and reduced operational costs substantially. The IBM SmartCloud Enterprise solution supports the highQ business model by offering extreme scalability. “Often clients all of a sudden need considerably more capacity,” explains Thomas Hornig. “With our own infrastructure, it could take up to six weeks to expand the capacity on that scale. With IBM SmartCloud Enterprise, we can handle steep capacity increases faster, reducing the provisioning time to only a few hours or days, a reduction of more than 90 percent.”

In practice, transport companies and associations use TicketOffice from highQ as cloud solution to provide e-tickets to customers. People can check in and check out at any station. The highQ software automatically calculates the fares to ensure passengers do not have to deal with complex tariffs and ticket machines, making it easier for people to use their services, and cutting the ticketing and operational costs for the transport companies. Furthermore, anonymized usage data enables transport companies to make better decisions about routes, frequency and vehicle size by understanding customer demand – improving efficiency.

In the competitive transport industry, costs are an important factor. With highQ solutions, transport companies can manage buses, trains and personnel more efficiently, without compromising service quality, and are even able to schedule more attractive roster plans for their employees. For example, with the PlanB planning solution, transport companies require up to five percent fewer buses.

highQ’s future concepts include seamless integration of public transport systems and individual mobility solutions, such as car sharing and cycle hire schemes that contribute to reductions in total traffic volumes and are environmentally friendly. Thomas Hornig remarks, “highQ shares the IBM vision of Smarter Cities®. By helping to improve the ease of use of public transport systems and implement integrated modern mobility concepts comprising, for example, public transport and electric mobility, we can avoid pollution and ease congestion in strained cities.”
