Founded in Helsinki, Finland in 1996, Finncontainers is a family-owned logistics company, specializing in the sale, rental and transportation of new and used shipping containers. With operations across Finland, the company employs four people and generates an annual turnover equivalent to USD 4.3 million.

Need for a dependable collaboration platform
As a young company, Finncontainers wanted a dependable collaboration platform on which to build a strong network of partners, suppliers and customers. This would enable it to react quickly to business opportunities.

Sarianne Reinikkala, Managing Director at Finncontainers, explains: “Email is the first point of contact for our customers, so it was important to choose a platform that we could trust. Because our industry moves quickly, we knew that we stood to miss out on sales opportunities if, for example, our email server went down unexpectedly.”

Choosing IBM Collaboration Solutions
After engaging consulting services from IBM Premier Business Partner Netwell Oy, Finncontainers selected IBM Notes and Domino software as its email platform.

“We chose the IBM collaboration platform because we were impressed with its strong reputation for stability,” says Sarianne Reinikkala. “In addition, we realized that the versatility of this platform was capable of addressing many of our other collaboration requirements.”

Working together with Netwell, the company deployed Netwell’s Domino-based customer relationship management (CRM) application. Using the CRM solution, the company gained the ability to create, store and share important documents, organize meetings, and set up workgroups for internal discussions.

“IBM Collaboration Solutions enabled us to manage many aspects of our business process from a single platform,” says Sarianne Reinikkala. “Using the IBM solution, it is possible to for us to communicate as effectively with a large number of partners, suppliers and customers outside the company as we can within our own small team – which makes it easier to build relationships and grow the business.”

Deepening customer relationships
To deepen its relationship with customers, and to help to improve the efficiency of Finnish exports in general, Finncontainers again turned to its IBM platform.

Sarianne Reinikkala comments: “In the past, information on how to effectively pack, load and transport containers was only accessible at specialist courses run within the industry. Because such courses are not widely available, we recognized that there was a skills gap in many smaller Finnish companies – leading to inefficient spending on logistics.

“In close collaboration with Netwell, we implemented an open-source wiki for container logistics in Finland using a DominoWiki template from the OpenNTF community. Within just four weeks, we were able to create a one-stop, public knowledge base for container logistics. Today, the wiki offers Finnish businesses advice to help them to pack their containers more efficiently – helping them to optimize their logistics costs.”

Meeting future demands
More than 16 years since its first deployment, IBM Notes and Domino software still enables Finncontainers to communicate effectively with the Finnish logistics market. Today, IBM Collaboration Solutions are the foundation of the company’s paperless office initiative, and Finncontainers is using the latest mobility features of IBM Notes Traveler to boost business flexibility, efficiency and agility.

“Thanks to the IBM solution, we can respond to business opportunities via email from anywhere with an internet connection – 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” concludes Sarianne Reinikkala. “IBM Collaboration Solutions have been with our business from the very beginning – and they continue to evolve to meet our changing business requirements.”
