IBM Business Partner:
STIAL Delice Danone (Société Tunisienne des Industries Alimentaires) is a major food manufacturing and distribution business in Tunisia. A partner of the global Danone group—which holds the number one position in worldwide sales of fresh dairy products—STIAL is the leading manufacturer of fresh dairy products in Tunisia. The company employs more than 700 people producing and distributing a broad range of milk- and yoghurt-based products.
Slow backup and recovery for business-critical data represented a business risk for STIAL. The company needed to ensure business continuity with a faster, more reliable backup solution.
Working with IDSYS, STIAL deployed a first-of-its-kind solution for North and West Africa: a high-speed IBM® System Storage® ProtecTIER® TS7650 Deduplication Appliance to accelerate backup and recovery.
Reduces backup time from more than 24 hours to just 13 hours; accelerates recovery by a factor of more than three; cuts backup errors from 30 per day to zero; provides 10:1 deduplication ratio.

One of STIAL’s key strategic goals is to increase the per-capita consumption of healthy dairy products in Tunisia—a factor which is driving continued rapid growth in its business.
Business growth inevitably means growth in data volume—especially for a company like STIAL that is steadily deploying new applications to its users. As the amount of stored data grew, STIAL was experiencing significant problems with backup and recovery. The time taken to complete a full backup to tape of its distributed computing infrastructure was more than 24 hours, not counting the time to actually validate the backup.
Wassila Ben Miled, Manager of the Infrastructure and Security Department at STIAL Delice Danone, comments: “Everyone in our business relies on shared data in multiple applications. The growing length of time required to complete the backup of that data was a major risk, because it meant that some important data was not being backed up properly. Equally, we needed to be sure that we could rapidly and reliably recover our data in the event of a server crash or a full-scale disaster.”
STIAL turned to its regular infrastructure partner, IDSYS, for a solution recommendation. Following a demonstration of the technology by IBM, STIAL opted to deploy an IBM System Storage TS7650 Deduplication Gateway. This virtual tape library solution is now used to back up all of the systems and data from STIAL’s distributed infrastructure. This environment includes IBM System x®3250, x3550 and x3650 servers and IBM BladeCenter® HS22 and HS23 servers running a large virtual server landscape, as well as important Microsoft SQL Server databases supporting factory management, production control and HR applications. Symantec Backup Exec software manages the backup and recovery of data.
“Our ProtecTIER system is currently protecting a mix of more than 20 virtual and physical servers, including our corporate file server,” says Wassila Ben Miled. “Essentially, the new solution protects everything apart from our ERP system, which runs on the IBM i operating system and has its own BRMS backup solution.”
The ProtecTIER system at STIAL currently holds 5.3 TB of data, compressed at an average ratio of 10 to one, enabling highly efficient use of the available capacity. In the long term, this will translate into significant capital savings for STIAL, by reducing the amount of capacity it needs to deploy.
“The ProtecTIER solution gives us a better adapted and more convenient alternative to a conventional tape library,” says Wassila Ben Miled. “The implementation ran very smoothly, with input from both IBM and IDSYS, and we very quickly saw the benefits in terms of increased performance and reliability.”
Backup—including verification—now takes 13 hours, meaning that the introduction of the ProtecTIER solution has effectively halved the time taken with the previous solution. The increased speed of backup also means less impact on production systems. Equally, STIAL estimates that data restoration is more than three times faster than it was.
“Restoring data was very slow in the past,” says Wassila Ben Miled. “Our production lines run 24 hours a day, six days a week, so our windows for recovery are very limited. The high speed at which we can recover data using the ProtecTIER solution is a big advantage. And being able to recover data rapidly increases the business users’ confidence in our abilities as an IT department.”
Reliable, low-maintenance solution
Beyond these significant performance improvements, STIAL also sees major benefits in terms of reliability and manageability. Previously, the main backup would generate up to 30 error messages a day; today, it runs with zero errors, eliminating the need for manual intervention.
“With the ProtecTIER solution in place, we have real peace of mind that our data is protected,” says Wassila Ben Miled. “As well as greatly reducing our risk, the increased reliability means we spend less time on routine maintenance. I would estimate that my backup manager saves three hours each day that he used to spend on validating and restarting failed backups. Now, he can just confirm that there are green lights across the board, and get on with other work.”
She concludes: “In a business that deals with the production and distribution of perishable goods in a hot country, it’s critical to ensure that all corporate systems and data are always available for users. With the new ProtecTIER solution, we have significantly improved our ability to safeguard critical systems and data, so that we can be confident about supporting the business as it continues to grow. Equally, the ProtecTIER solution provides clear efficiencies for the IT department, improving the utilization of our installed storage capacity and reducing the administrative burden associated with data backup.”
