P.O.S. Data System is an IT services provider founded in 1993, with offices in four cities throughout Sicily, Italy. Its services range from server virtualization to high-performance computing, from point-of-sale solutions to data protection. The company’s clients demand constant innovation, in terms of IT service capability and new product offerings, all of which must be delivered at very competitive price points.

To meet its clients’ needs, P.O.S. Data System wanted to extend its own capabilities, but knew that it was simply not possible to introduce cloud services in a cost-effective manner on the company’s existing server and storage landscape.

Supporting innovative services with IBM Flex System
Marina Noto, CEO at P.O.S. Data System, explains, “The key to differentiating ourselves from the competition and meeting our customers’ high expectations was to go the extra mile and work towards offering a wider range of services. Cloud computing is a very popular topic nowadays, and all of our clients know the advantages it brings about in terms of managing and accessing applications easily, rapidly and securely – crucial objectives for any business.

“One of our main requirements was to deploy a platform that could really support us in our business growth and in the development of new services. The sheer speed of the implementation process – which lasted a mere five days – immediately proved how simple, integrated and fast the Flex System is,” says Marina Noto. “The Flex System was the winning choice for its extreme scalability, resiliency and integration – keys to enhanced cost-effectiveness and easy management.”

The P.O.S. Data System team looked to build a data center that would enable cloud computing, allow easy and rapid service extensions and offer reduced costs of operation and ownership. The company chose an IBM Flex System solution with IBM SmartCloud Entry and IBM Flex System Manager software. For storage and data management, P.O.S. Data System selected IBM Storwize V7000, IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager FastBack and IBM Tivoli Endpoint Manager.

IBM Flex System offers a flexible architecture that has built-in networking, virtualization and compute capabilities for increased simplicity, greater performance and virtually limitless scalability – all pivotal requirements for P.O.S. Data System.

The environment consists of a Flex System Enterprise Chassis housing three Flex System p24L compute nodes based on IBM® POWER® architecture technologies optimized for Linux workloads. System resources are virtualized with VMware hypervisor software, helping the company maximize utilization of resources in the face of fluctuating demand. The Flex System Manager module unifies the solution for operational ease, managing physical and virtual compute, storage and networking resources from a single point of control.

Marina Noto continues, “We opted for the Flex System because it provides our data center with high-speed performance and maximum business agility. What’s more, its flexibility allows us to scale according to our clients’ exact requirements.”

Enabling cloud computing and easy data management
P.O.S. Data System leverages IBM SmartCloud Entry software to set up highly secure private cloud services easily and quickly. The company is able to deploy solutions for new customers and extend service offerings in a matter of hours, hugely increasing business agility in response to demand.

To support the requirements for data management, retention and storage, P.O.S. Data System deployed IBM Storwize V7000, which provides exceptional performance, availability, advanced functions and highly-scalable capacity. The company uses Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack software to supply backup and disaster recovery capability. IBM Tivoli Endpoint Manager software provides enterprise-wide security.

Keeping business on the cutting edge
With the IBM Flex System, Storwize V7000 and Tivoli solution in place, P.O.S. Data System is able to develop and launch innovative private cloud services to its expanding customer base, while also providing improved productivity, easy deployment and direct cost savings.

Marina Noto comments, “We are very happy with the outcomes of this solution, because we can now respond with a clear ‘yes’ to all those clients who require cutting-edge cloud services for their business, whether they are a small, family-owned company or a large institution such as a private hospital.

“The new infrastructure is much faster and simpler to manage for tasks such as adding virtual machines and running backups. As a result, IT productivity has increased by 30 percent, and our clients have complimented us on the flawless and totally reliable services we now provide.”

The reduction in IT operations costs and effort allows P.O.S. Data System to invest a larger share of its financial and human resources on designing innovative services for existing and new customers. The company uses the capabilities offered by the integrated IBM solution to play a decisive role in supporting its customers’ businesses, and establish itself as a leader in the crowded and competitive IT world.

Marina Noto concludes, “With IBM Flex System we are finally able to develop and offer private cloud services cost-effectively and reliably. The Flex System accelerates onboarding of new customers at low incremental cost, and enables rapid deployment of new product and service offerings, meeting our strategic needs for flexibility and capability to help us win the competitive battle.”
