Headquartered in Oslo, Norway, and employing around 10,000 people, EVRY is one of the leading IT companies in the Nordic region. The company has multiple lines of business – including solution implementation, consulting, and IFS ERP application hosting.
EVRY One Outsourcing Services Linköping AB (EVRY Outsourcing) is the Swedish outsourcing division of the company. EVRY Outsourcing hosts IFS ERP solutions for a number of small and medium business clients, and is one of the largest outsourcing providers in Sweden.
EVRY Outsourcing wanted to continue to provide an excellent service to its existing customers, and prepare its infrastructure for business growth.
As Carl-Martin Rydenlund, Operations Manager at EVRY One Outsourcing Services Linköping, explains: “Today, many business customers are looking to outsource their ERP systems to keep pace with increasing transaction loads and to support new business initiatives. Because of this, it was more important than ever for us to be able to rapidly provision new IFS ERP environments to keep up with demand.”
In the past, the company used a distributed landscape of 25 servers to support the needs of over 40 clients. After reviewing its infrastructure, the company found licensing costs for its customers’ Oracle databases and data center energy usage would rise significantly if its existing server landscape were scaled out.
In order to support new customers, EVRY Outsourcing needed a cost-effective, stable platform that would scale out easily to meet its future needs. The company also required a solution that would enable it to meet the aggressive environmental targets set by its head office in Oslo.
“We wanted a solution that would enable us to provision new customer environments rapidly, and also meet our green target of reducing data center energy consumption by 20 percent,” says Rydenlund. “With our data center footprint almost at capacity, we determined that we needed to refresh our legacy hardware with a dense, energy-efficient landscape.”
Building a private cloud solution
EVRY Outsourcing engaged IBM to consolidate its old infrastructure on three IBM Power 740 Express servers running the IBM AIX® operating system, and connected to an IBM System Storage DS8800. To facilitate the non-disruptive storage scalability required to grow the business, EVRY Outsourcing installed the IBM SAN Volume Controller appliance.
“We chose IBM because of their status as a trusted supplier,” says Rydenlund. “We were also extremely impressed by the Oracle database performance benchmarks on the POWER7® processor architecture. In addition, by running Oracle in logical partitions [LPARs], we realized that we would be able to substantially lower our licensing costs – a saving that we could pass on to our customers.”
EVRY is in the process of configuring its solution as a private cloud – enabling a virtualized central pool of resources to be orchestrated via a single point of control using IBM PowerVM software.
“We are now more than half way through the implementation, and we have experienced no issues at all,” says Rydenlund. “The EVRY implementation team has been working closely with IBM throughout this project. Even though we haven’t needed it, we are confident that qualified help from the IBM team is always close at hand.”
Working with IBM, EVRY has achieved its aim of building a scalable, flexible and high-performance platform for its IFS ERP services. Thanks to its private cloud solution, the company can quickly provision new ERP environments, or modify existing ones, in tune with customer demand.
Boosting provisioning speed
“In the past, our legacy IT system made provisioning new ERP services a complex, costly, and time-consuming task,” says Rydenlund. “Because we can now manage all of our compute resources centrally as a single, virtualized pool with IBM PowerVM, we have cut the costs associated with provisioning new IFS ERP environments by 20 percent.
“What’s more, we can complete provisioning tasks 50 percent faster than we could previously – offering our clients an enhanced level of service.”
Reducing management complexity
By consolidating its IFS workloads from 25 mid-range servers to just three high-performance IBM Power 740 Express servers, the company estimates that it will require 40 percent less effort to manage the infrastructure and provide the same high level of service to over 40 clients. With a more compact server landscape, the company has also been able to drive significant improvements to its data center’s energy footprint.
Meeting green targets
Rydenlund comments: “The high level of energy efficiency of our new IBM Power 740 Express servers has enabled us to reduce our Linköping data center’s power requirements by 20 percent – helping us to meet our corporate green energy targets.”
Because the company runs its Oracle database instances on multiple LPARs on its IBM Power 740 Express servers, licensing costs have been significantly reduced. EVRY Outsourcing will be able to pass on Oracle database license savings to customers – offering a more compelling price point, and helping the company win new business.
Looking to the future
By migrating into a private cloud environment, EVRY Outsourcing has gained the scalable, energy-efficient solution it needed to support business growth.
“We are extremely satisfied with our IBM private cloud solution,” concludes Rydenlund. “By continuing our close collaboration with IBM, we can easily scale out our solution to match business growth – without ever losing the core benefits of straightforward manageability and rapid provisioning.”
