Usha International Limited (UIL) is one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of a wide range of consumer durables. Founded in 1889, the company expanded into a wide variety of sectors over the next 100 years – such as textiles, chemicals, sugar, automobiles, engines, automotive components, edible oils, fertilisers, engineering foundries, sewing machines, fans, and home appliances.

Business need:
Usha International Limited (UIL) found that business growth was outpacing the capacity of its IT systems. As the volume of customer data grew, response times from its business warehouse system was impacting the ability to understand its customers, costs and profitability.

Solution:
UIL implemented SAP HANA software and selected the IBM Systems solution for SAP HANA based on IBM System x® 3690 X5 and x3950 X5 Workload Optimized servers.

Benefits:
UIL experienced an 85 percent reduction in time taken for query execution (approximately seven times faster), with database read time reduced by almost 99 percent. The overall data load time has been reduced by 90 percent. Based on the near-real-time information availability provided by SAP HANA software, UIL is able to analyze, forecast and understand its customer opportunities for the next phase of international growth.

Usha International Limited (UIL) is one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of a wide range of consumer durables. Founded in 1889, the company expanded into a wide variety of sectors over the next 100 years – such as textiles, chemicals, sugar, automobiles, engines, automotive components, edible oils, fertilisers, engineering foundries, sewing machines, fans, and home appliances.

UIL clocked revenues of 170 million Indian Rupees (approximately $3 million) in 2011. With an enviable distribution network spread in different countries across the world, and a highly impressive Pan-Indian brand footprint, UIL has four manufacturing units, 16 offices, 33 warehouses, and 60 company outlets in 43 cities.

Infrastructural challenges faced

UIL had SAP R/3 Version 4.6C software installed across all its office locations, including plants, warehouses and retail outlets, connected with an MPLS-VPN network. While SAP brought about standardization of process and methodologies, the current IT infrastructure was being utilized at capacity and needed to be scaled up to meet the growing business demand.

The challenges faced by UIL can be summarised as:

  • Increasing size of its business warehouse of 450 GB, growing at 40 GB a month
  • Performance challenges in business analytics reporting
  • Long data load times
  • End-of-life hardware

UIL wanted to implement an application-based solution for superior data analytics. The company was looking at in-memory computing, the game-changing ability to analyse massive data sets in real-time. It fundamentally transforms business processes, decisions and business models.

UIL was looking to achieve:

UIL decided to implement SAP HANA software to deliver superior analytics that combines high-volume transactions with analytics to improve existing planning, forecasting, optimising of prices, and other processes. SAP HANA accelerates business intelligence by leveraging SAP BusinessObjects, IBM Cognos® and other integrated third-party clients.

IBM – the chosen technology partner

To address the challenges, UIL started with a thorough analysis of vendor capabilities in terms of infrastructure set-up and comparing the subsequent performance of the solution offered by IBM, HP and Cisco. All three vendors offer pre-configured standard solutions suitable for SAP HANA software.

The IBM Systems solution for SAP HANA offered by IBM is sold as a ready-to-run appliance, with the software and hardware combined as a package in a series of set sizes depending on the data volumes to be processed.

The most important and decisive factor for UIL was the solution partner’s industry experience, with the ability to understand application requirements and implement a complete end-to-end performance-intensive solution.

IBM offered value to UIL with a hardware/software combination solution that would provide an interruption-free, high-end IT set-up, perfectly designed for successful implementation of the SAP HANA application. Finally, the stringent quality assurance policy that IBM follows convinced UIL that IBM would be the ideal value-added technology partner.

Perfect blend of hardware and software

Usha International Limited is the first company in India to implement the IBM Systems solution for SAP HANA, based on workload-optimized IBM System x servers.

UIL selected the IBM Systems solution for SAP HANA based on the IBM System x 3690 X5 and 3950 X5 Workload Optimized Solution, which includes 128 GB and 256 GB of memory and IBM eXFlash with solid-state drives (SSDs).

SAP HANA running on powerful IBM eX5 Enterprise servers combines the speed and efficiency of in-memory processing, with the ability to analyze massive amounts of business data – enabling companies to eliminate barriers between real-time events and real-time business decisions.

The IBM System x 3690 X5 and x 3950 X5 Workload Optimised servers are equipped with two powerful and reliable Intel Xeon E7 processors with ten cores each. These top-of-the-line processors deliver performance designed to handle data-demanding workloads with improved scalability and increased memory and I/O capacity.

As business expands, IBM provides a pay-as-you-go approach that simplifies the process of scaling up. This attractive feature preserves the initial server investment by adding capacity to the original configuration through the addition of server nodes.

The unique, highly scalable IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS™) is deployed on all IBM systems for SAP HANA, enabling high-performance SSD and disk access and the capability to implement high-availability solutions using GPFS replication and seamless cluster extension. No storage area network (SAN) is required and the database capacity can be expanded by adding nodes.
