Significant is an independent research consultancy that focuses primarily on issues with social relevance. For example, the agency is involved in developing and assessing policy and strategy for topics such as market operations in the field of healthcare, public order and safety, wellbeing and socially responsible enterprise. Significant is made up of a group of approximately 50 consultants and has been working as an independent agency since 2003.

Challenge
Every job is different, which is why Significant offers a customised approach. This sometimes involves research alone, but may also encompass a whole process, including detailed analysis and practical advice. To return the best results and guarantee the quality of its approach, the agency has been ISO-certified since 2004. This means that Significant meets the highest standards in terms of the service it provides.

Clients come to Significant with an extremely varied range of research and consultancy assignments. These may include customer satisfaction surveys or assessments of policy implementation. Sample projects include improving the procurement of care for various health providers, assessing the recent Dutch Pardons Act, advising municipalities about subcontracting, and supporting a procurement improvement program for the Dutch Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management. Significant’s aim is to provide in-depth research and well-reasoned advice designed to enhance the strategy of its clients, as well as assist them in making the right policy-related and strategic decisions.

Solution
To enable it to carry out top-quality research, Significant has been using IBM SPSS Predictive Analytics for over five years. Many surveys involve enormous amounts of data, sometimes involving more than 20,000 respondents. The IBM solution provides extensive capabilities for processing and analysing these vast amounts of data simply and efficiently. Significant is then able to produce practical advice based on accurate information.

Results
Using the IBM SPSS Predictive Analytics, Significant is able to carry out its research and analyses with great efficiency, based on scientific criteria. Significant regularly conducts far-ranging surveys and IBM SPSS Predictive Analytics helps to collect, process and analyse the large volumes of data involved. The software also enables many features of the data to be stored in a single file. These ‘enriched’ storage capabilities ensure that additional information can be allocated to the data within the work file itself. As a result, for example, it is possible to allocate labels to response codes and a range of other variables. This in turn enables the data to be displayed in a clearly organised manner.

“The IBM SPSS Predictive Analytics software is very user-friendly, offering an extensive range of capabilities and helping us work more efficiently,” says Lydia Vunderink, consultant at Significant. “In particular, exporting data from IBM SPSS Predictive Analytics into a program such as Microsoft Excel saves us an enormous amount of work. Because we work with this software on a daily basis, we benefit greatly from it.”

The IBM solution also makes it possible to generate different sorts of data overviews.

“Clients often ask us for a summary of the research data at various points during the process,” continues Vunderink. “IBM SPSS Predictive Analytics offers plenty of options for generating output, which makes it easy for us to put the right information in a summary. So it is no great effort to keep our clients up-to-date as we go along.”
