Case Study

Front-safe A/S delivers secure cloud backup and recovery services to thousands of clients using public, private, and hybrid clouds. Front-safe uses IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager software, IBM System Storage® technology, and IBM System x® servers to provide critical infrastructure for its portal software.

The need

Front-safe is the largest provider of public cloud backup services to businesses in Denmark, gaining 30 percent market share in four years. To achieve its success, the company needed a centralized, automated data protection solution that could support thousands of companies but required minimal hands-on support and maintenance.

The solution

When Front-safe executives evaluated data protection solutions, IBM’s products and strategy stood out.

“Tivoli Storage Manager software enables us to backup data 60 percent faster than other solutions we evaluated, and was the only solution that could support huge installations with few technical resources,” says Peter Nielsen, CEO of Front-safe. “Today, we can manage backups for about 4,000 systems per technician. Other backup software would need twice as many people to support the same business. By combining Tivoli Storage Manager software with the Front-safe web portal in between IBM systems and storage, we have a stable and scalable environment that can grow with us.”

Front-safe has further increased efficiency by upgrading to Tivoli Storage Manager V6.3 software in 2011. “The Tivoli data deduplication capability reduced our backup storage footprint by 30 percent and power and cooling costs by 30 - 40 percent,” says Nielsen. “These savings enable us to keep costs low so we can attract new customers with the best price. Additionally, node replication makes recovery of very large files faster and more secure.”

Front-safe’s award-winning portal software makes it easy for organizations and managed service providers to provision, manage and bill customers for backup services. It is also the core of Front-safe’s Cloud Business solution that enables telecommunications providers and hosting firms worldwide to cost-effectively deliver cloud-based data backup services using their own private, public or hybrid clouds.

“Our portal provides everything an organization needs to run a successful cloud backup service,” says Nielsen. “There is no faster or more effective way to enable Tivoli Storage Manager software for cloud backup services. Our approach makes it possible for clients to convert to secure, reliable cloud backups in less than a day.”

Take, for example, GlobalConnect, an alternative leading broadband provider in Denmark. “We are surprised at how easily the solution helped us meet our internal and external backup requirements, protecting more than 100 TB of data and helping us apply a new strategy to support our enterprise clients,” says Niels Zibrandtsen, CEO of GlobalConnect.
