Overview
How IBM System z is helping Dave Beulke and Associates stay in front of new reporting requirements at lightning speeds
Business need:
Data management specialists Dave Beulke and Associates were challenged with developing a data storage and analytics solution for a government agency with 10 years of information and brand new reporting requirements. They were tasked with optimizing complex SQL and increasing data processing speed, all while records and reports continued to be generated.
Solution:
This database that we designed did all sorts of parallelism, took advantage of all the latest and greatest features within DB2 z/OS and we used a lot of OLAP functions, a lot of the MQTs and a lot of the complex SQL that was available within DB2.
Benefits:
In the matter of six months we designed and implemented this large data warehouse that had 22 billion rows in it for the client and it was a huge success taking reports from 37 hours down to minutes and some even in seconds.

Dave Beulke:
Smarter Computing means to me is leveraging new forms of information and making the world better because of it.
My client is a government agency that had some new reporting requirements and they wanted to create a large data warehouse of the ten years worth of information that they had. They were dealing with compliance issues and governance issues and they wanted to get all those reporting requirements into a new data warehouse that they could do analytics on and do all sorts of extra reporting.
In the matter of six months we designed and implemented this large data warehouse that had 22 billion rows in it for the client and it was a huge success taking reports from 37 hours down to minutes and some even in seconds.
This database that we designed did all sorts of parallelism, took advantage of all the latest and greatest features within DB2 z/OS and we used a lot of OLAP functions, a lot of the MQTs and a lot of the complex SQL that was available within DB2.
The z platform is able to handle very very complex SQL and optimize that and really make the overall processing and flow of the data tremendously fast.
With even more being added into the warehouse as time has gone by because more government requirements cause more records to be generated and more reports to be made off of those extra records that get put into this warehouse. So, it’s continually growing at this data warehouse.
Since it was on the z platform they didn’t have to do anything special with it. It fit into their infrastructure, it fit into all with all their other OLTP applications and it ran side by side, so all their disaster recovery, their availability procedures and all their security procedures could be leveraged very quickly within the z platform. So the z platform really gives you the ability to run any type of workload on any type of operating system anywhere at all
It’s really fun to do these types of systems because being a veteran I really like the challenge of doing these big types of systems and this was a huge success for my client and a huge success for you know everybody I talked to about this system…and the client was very very happy.
