Deployment country:
Italy

Solution:
Optimizing IT, Software & Product Innovation Framework, Storage Infrastructure Optimization (SIO), Supply Chain Management, Workload Management

Overview

Fratelli Carli was founded in Imperia in 1911, about 100 years ago, thanks to the intuition of my great-grandfather, Giovanni Carli. Today, after 100 years, the delivery of the Carli products is made directly to customers’ doorsteps through a network of independent drivers.

Business need:
Carli customers mainly want quality from us. We strive to achieve that level of quality from the moment customers place their orders—for example, by calling our call center. Such quality level continues – well, must continue – through the delivery process, when the independent driver from our network arrives to the customer’s doorstep. In the event customers have any questions or concerns after delivery, we want to be there to assist and solve any issues they might have.

Solution:
All the core functions within Fratelli Carli are managed by the IBM mainframe, in particular through the z/VSE. We’re talking about managing the customer database, orders, and shipments. Everything revolves around this.

Benefits:
The greatest capability of the mainframe is its ability to increase power, memory, and number of processors without requiring any changes within either the programs or the operating system. This is a big breakthrough compared to other systems. This protects your investments.

Claudia Carli -
Fratelli Carli was founded in Imperia in 1911, about 100 years ago, thanks to the intuition of my
great-grandfather, Giovanni Carli. Today, after 100 years, the delivery of the Carli products is
made directly to customers’ doorsteps through a network of independent drivers.

Carli customers mainly want quality from us. We strive to achieve that level of quality from the
moment customers place their orders—for example, by calling our call center. Such quality
level continues – well, must continue – through the delivery process, when the independent
driver from our network arrives to the customer’s doorstep. In the event customers have any
questions or concerns after delivery, we want to be there to assist and solve any issues they
might have.

Edardo Flumiani -
All the core functions within Fratelli Carli are managed by the IBM mainframe, in particular
through the z/VSE. We’re talking about managing the customer database, orders, and
shipments. Everything revolves around this.

Marco Guardini -
Well, at that time we picked a few software packages to be installed on the VSE. Everything
worked well for 5 years, 6 years, and then we had the automatic development of these
applications on the web. However, the VSE was not ready to support these web applications.
So we decided to add an IFL tool, a specific engine for Linux mainframe to interface with our
VSE.

When we discovered that capability to interact with different systems, all the doors opened.
We integrated the pricing web service, and installed a new version of the accounting and
inventory software on the Linux mainframe. So at that point we were able to recall – and
we’re still able to recall – all the services available on this platform. Using the VSE environment
dynamically is the key to success: utilizing different platforms for the most appropriate
functions.

The greatest capability of the mainframe is its ability to increase power, memory, and number
of processors without requiring any changes within either the programs or the operating
system. This is a big breakthrough compared to other systems. This protects your investments.

The moment we unlocked the CICS VSE dialogue with the different systems was a very
important thing for me… it was a turning point, a time when we risked having to buy software
on other platforms; instead we managed to install them on the mainframe and some on Linux.
They interact directly with the VSE, and this is a huge achievement.

With this system we manage 1.2 million transactions per year. And this was possible through a
strong integration process via our web services between z/VSE and z Linux.

We currently have five hundred thousand tasks for CICS call center. And we can do that only
because the infrastructure is the mainframe VSE/CICS which is purely IBM.

Claudia Carli -
Today, generally speaking, the variety of products available to customers is endless. To meet
these new customer needs, we’ve been working for a hundred years with extra care and
passion in a tradition that made us famous for our extreme commitment. These are the
ingredients that allow us to move forward successfully.
