Overview

After a push towards a distributed computing environment, applications are moving back to the mainframe. They have been at the heart of every successful company, processing thousands of transactions year after year. More than the expected reliability, customers using z10 and zEnterprise are finding new integrations between hardware and software, giving them performance advances that shave hours into milliseconds. Mamie Sheen, Mainline Information Systems

When I think about my customers in the last 10 years, I realize that they started out with all these great legacy applications, they wanted them on the mainframe because of the reliability, the accessibility, the scalability, the security that the mainframe provided...

Then there seemed to be kind of push … to try and take those types of applications and move them to a more distributed environment…

But then they realized that the mission critical data was still on the mainframe and it wasn’t going anywhere…

Customers are now finally seeing, it’s time to come back to leaving the data where it is and being able to manipulate it and get all the answers in the data warehouse and the Business Intelligence and the analytics that they are looking for on the mainframe…

When you really look at what has been the backbone of every major corporation in the United States that has hundreds of thousands of transactions being processed, it’s being powered by the mainframe.

What is really appealing to our customers right now about the z10 and what's exciting then about the z enterprise is the direction that IBM has taken in really integrating the software with the hardware. And you are seeing that with the new offerings that we have as far as the Smart Analytics Optimizer and then also the 9600 which packages the software with the hardware…

Now something that might have taken 24 hours is only going to take milliseconds…

If I cut costs in the wrong way and it has a negative effect on my revenue then I need to know that. So Business Analytics and being able to predict, if I do this then this will most likely happen, it’s very, very important to give all of our customers that competitive edge they need to be continuing to grow and be healthy.

I think that it’s going to change the type of questions and answers that everybody can mine from their data and it will make a big difference in the way that all businesses run.

We have Optim and Guardium because security and masking and all those things are so important to our customers, IBM is always kind of a little bit ahead of the game trying to figure out what it is that customers need…

DB2 10 is absolutely amazing, 20% increase in performance straight out of the box without any kind of special tuning or anything like that, so it’s really a very exciting time for all of our DB2 customers.

My System z customers rely on their System z and couldn’t imagine being with any other platform for any of their mission-critical systems.
