Case Study

Founded in 1986, Servicio Aragonés de Salud is a public healthcare system that offers a network of 15 hospitals in the Aragon region of Spain. Located in Saragossa, the organization employs approximately 3,000 people.

The Opportunity
The regional government of Aragonés, Spain, was intent on modernizing the human resources platform for all employees of the agencies and facilities in its jurisdiction. The officials hoped to achieve more effective resource planning and better serve citizens’ needs. The scheduling of nurses in the hospital system posed special challenges, however, because hospital operations tend to be complex and heavily constrained by scheduling rules and regulations designed to keep both nurses and patients safe. Servicio Aragonés de Salud sought a solution that would offer the speed and tools to optimize resource allocation in consideration of more than 1,000 variables and the flexibility to frequently reschedule daily operations in response to unplanned situations.

What Makes It Smarter
Hospital staffers understand that responding effectively to constant change is just as important as presenting a calm steadiness in all patient encounters. Servicio Aragonés de Salud, the agency managing this region’s 15 hospitals, needed to ensure proper nursing care levels while meeting contractual agreements, providing required rest periods, equitably distributing vacation time and productively utilizing specialized skills all with the flexibility to revise staff assignments with little advance notice.

The new solution enables the organization to optimize the scheduling of its 800 nurses, accommodating more than 1,000 variables and affording nurses the opportunity to perform high-value tasks using the skills they’ve acquired through experience and specialized training. Performing complex mathematical calculations, the solution rapidly generates schedules for the organization’s hospitals and facilitates frequent updates. In addition to the time and money savings resulting from the automated, rules-based solution, the agency is receiving accolades from nurses as well as patients for the improved working conditions and quality of care.
