Case Study

Based in Louisville, Kentucky, Kindred Healthcare, Inc. is a diversified post-acute healthcare provider. The company operates hospitals, nursing centers and a contract rehabilitation-services business across the United States, providing healthcare services in 2,200 locations, has annual revenues of USD6 billion and approximately 76,000 employees.

Challenge
The typical patient served by Kindred Healthcare in its post-acute-care hospitals experiences four to six medical complications simultaneously. Their length of stay may be 30 days or more, as opposed to the characteristic four-day stay in an acute-care hospital.

As one might expect, providing healthcare for such extended periods produces a massive volume of direct patient care-related data. Cost- effectively managing this data, along with decreasing reimbursement rates, forced Kindred Healthcare to re-evaluate the way it was delivering care.

Solution
Kindred Healthcare’s IT department converted these challenges into opportunities by leveraging the insights within the massive volumes of data it was collecting. Utilizing big data analytics systems, Kindred Healthcare found ways to improve its quality of care while reducing the costs associated with providing that care. Central to this strategy is the availability of the data that supports its analytical systems.

Kindred Healthcare relies on IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager family of products to ensure the continuous availability of it’s data. To reduce the amount of data it maintains, the company stays current with the most recent releases of Tivoli Storage Manager, taking advantage of Tivoli Storage Manager software’s latest features, such as data deduplication, database and node-level replication, along with Tivoli Storage Manager

for Virtual Environments to protect the data generated in Kindred’s increasingly virtual environment. These combine with the IBM solution’s incremental-forever backup feature to accelerate backup processing times while decreasing data storage and reducing the amount of data going across the network.

“We dramatically reduced our RTOs [recovery time objectives] and RPOs [recovery point objectives], from several days to a few hours,” says Irfan Karachiwala, manager of enterprise data management at Kindred Healthcare. “That’s critically important, because we need services available 24x7. The quicker we recover them, the better care
we provide our patients.”

Karachiwala credits Tivoli Storage Manager software’s visibility, control and automation across the backup environment as contributing to his department’s reputation as an innovator and thought leader in the healthcare industry. “The IBM products help make our IT smarter. The agility and flexibility that Tivoli Storage Manager provides is unmatched in the market. In fact, we just recently we looked at the four products in Gartner’s top right quadrant, Commvault, EMC, Symantec and TSM. And what we always find that of all these products, TSM is the best well-rounded product.”
