MAV-START Railway Passenger Transport Co.

Predictive analytics used to guide financial and operating decisions, modeling complex business scenarios

Published on 11-Nov-2013

"When preparing reports, processing the raw data takes much less time, so there is more time available for analysis. This is the greatest single benefit of the whole project, as it is sometimes necessary to produce reports almost immediately. We estimate the time savings to be 30 percent, on average." - András Ujlaki, Director of Controlling

Case Study

Based in Budapest, Hungary, MAV-START Vasuti Szemelyszallito zrt., or the MAV-START Railway Passenger Transport Co. (MAV-START), transports approximately 140 million people throughout the country each year on its passenger-rail operations. Formed in 2007, MAV-START employs more than 7,000 people and is a subsidiary of MAV zrt., the state railway company of Hungary.

The Opportunity
To keep trains running smoothly, MAV-START Vasuti Szemelyszallito zrt., must coordinate ticket sales, train schedules, passenger loads, vehicle maintenance, human resources, fuel prices, exchange rates and more. However, MAV-START collected and processed this data manually, assembling large and often flawed reports in spreadsheets. With this fuzzy view into operations and slow lead time, the rail operator found it difficult to keep up with changing business conditions. It needed an advanced business analytics platform for effective financial and operating planning.

What Makes It Smarter
It takes a lot of planning to make sure passenger trains run safely, profitably and on time. But even the most careful planning can be derailed by unexpected events such as natural disasters, emergency repairs, fluctuating fuel prices or simply seasonal spikes in traffic. MAV-START uses sophisticated predictive analytics to prepare for both day-to-day operations and the unexpected by modeling complex what-if scenarios to understand potential outcomes and make smarter decisions.

For example, by analyzing ticket sales over time, the organization gains insights into the daily, weekly and seasonal travel rhythms of its passengers and can forecast the financial and operating impact of changing conditions, whether it’s a sporting event, severe weather or a marketing initiative. In one case, MAV-START spotted an opportunity to launch a marketing campaign in conjunction with a local festival, offering expanded train schedules and discount passes. The campaign resulted in USD2 million in new revenue. The solution is also instrumental in capacity planning, maintenance schedules, sales forecasting and other critical operating decisions.
