Case Study

The mission of the Västerbotten County Council, Sweden, is to develop good health and a good living environment across the county. Its primary focus is on health and medical care; however, it is also involved in regional development, particularly regarding public transportation and the environment, areas that are important for good public health. The health and medical care sector comprises the county council’s largest area of operations with nearly 9,900 employees. There are 37 healthcare centers and cottage hospitals within the county.

The Opportunity
At a time when both the demand for healthcare and its costs are rising, this Swedish county council faced increasing budgetary constraints. After exceeding its healthcare budget for two years running, the council sought a way to rein in the costs associated with maintaining important medical and IT equipment, and to better manage the drug inventory within its healthcare system. It needed to reduce its budgets while still achieving its goal of 98 percent surgical availability for its citizens.

What Makes It Smarter
Lack of visibility into the location and status of medical equipment and drugs can cost healthcare organizations dearly in lost time and money — and can even put patients at risk. This healthcare administration organization has therefore established a strategy for the whole county to manage its logistics and service management. An asset management and inventory tracking solution has been implemented to track and manage the equipment and critical drugs. Automated preventive maintenance processes help ensure that medical equipment is up and running and where it needs to be for surgical procedures. Detailed drug tracking helps reduce redundant purchasing to cover lost or misplaced drugs and helps ensure their availability for patients where and when they need them.

Real Business Results
• Provides cost savings of almost SEK500,000 by reducing the inventory of unnecessary or duplicate drugs
• Reduces resource costs by up to 50 percent annually by replacing manual searches for and documentation of controlled drugs with automated recordkeeping and tracking
• Lowers investment costs for technical medical equipment through improved maintenance and by reducing equipment redundancies
