Cash America reduces backup time by more than 40 percent

IBM Tivoli software increases efficiencies while managing 15 percent annual data growth

Published on 11-Jul-2013

"Our critical metrics are backup time, data growth rate and cost. Tivoli Storage Manager software backs up incredibly fast, and its ‘incremental forever’ feature keeps our storage costs down even though our data pool is increasing." - Jeff Zurflueh, director of data center services, Cash America

Case Study

Founded in 1983, Cash America International, Inc. is a Fort Worth, Texas, retailer with more than 7,000 employees. The company operates roughly 1,000 pawn shops in the United States and Mexico. It also provides check-cashing services and short-term unsecured loans both through its pawn shops and in self-standing facilities.

Challenge
As part of a recent corporate reorganization, Cash America consolidated two discrete operating systems into one. To that point, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager software managed backup and recovery of the company’s UNIX data environment, while a competitive solution from CommVault managed Windows backup and recovery.

The company backs up nearly 100 TB of data, a volume that was evenly split between the UNIX and Windows operating systems and was increasing at an average rate of approximately 15 percent annually.

“We recognized how inefficient it was, from a management, support and resource perspective, to continue dealing with such data volumes on two different backup systems,” says Jeff Zurflueh, director of data center services for Cash America. “We’re also growing tremendously, which would do nothing but amplify those inefficiencies, so we decided it was the time to standardize our tools.”

Solution
According to Zurflueh, the decision about which platform to consolidate to was an easy one. “The bread and butter for our organization is our Oracle database, so we picked the one that did the better job of backing up and restoring Oracle, and that was Tivoli Storage Manager software.”

Prior to the migration, Cash America upgraded from version 5.5 to version 6.1 of the Tivoli Storage Manager software, and though the migration is still in process, Zurflueh says one feature of Tivoli Storage Manager V6.1 software, its “incremental forever” feature, quickly paid dividends. “Incremental forever eliminates worry about when to do full backups or differentials. It minimizes the amount of data we’re backing up, so we save time, tape, and drive maintenance costs and storage costs.” He continues, “Our critical metrics are backup time, data growth rate and cost. Tivoli Storage Manager software backs up incredibly fast, and its ‘incremental forever’ feature keeps our storage costs down even though our data pool is increasing.”

Zurflueh attributes further savings, along with the ability to deliver improved backup and maintenance service to Cash America retail stores, to the IBM System Storage® TS7650G ProtecTIER® Deduplication Gateway appliance. “With the virtual tape library, we protect data faster, store faster and eliminate tape library maintenance. We’re writing all of our primary backups to disk, and the secondary copies we send off-site are now on two drives instead of 10, so that’s a huge win for us.”

Benefits

  • Reduces backup times by 40 percent with the Tivoli Storage Manager software’s incremental forever feature
  • Eliminates the need to hire additional staff despite data volumes growing 15 percent annually
  • Improves backup and maintenance service to retail stores
