Case Study

Compass for Success is school-board collaborative organization with more than 30 members across the province of Ontario. It provides a data warehouse for the storage and reporting of school record information. The organization also enables member school districts to capture student-level assessment data and school data to support decision making based on evidence and fact. Compass for Success also holds several workshops conferences for professional development. Participating school boards provide funds in a shared pool that is used for further development and enhancement of data and analytics solutions.

The Opportunity
Every school community has its underperforming students. But identifying those students and reaching them in time to offer vital support can be a challenge. Although a business analytics solution can offer valuable insight into student performance, many Canadian school districts don’t have the budgets to fund and operate sophisticated analytics solutions. School boards across Canada began looking for a business analytics solution to help individual districts more accurately gauge performance and reach at-risk students.

What Makes It Smarter
If at first you can’t afford something, find a partner and pool resources. To help several school districts around Canada gain access to valuable business analytics resources, Compass for Success created a cooperative among more than 30 Canadian school boards to provide them with a centralized data warehouse and analytics tools to measure student, teacher and school performance. By pooling resources, the school districts large and small can now analyze historical data from their school records systems to more correctly report to provincial and federal governments on educational progress and compliance with educational initiatives. The solution also helps enable schools to more accurately monitor individual pupils, such as students from native populations, students with learning disabilities or students who speak English as a second language. The solution can provide insight into which pupils are at risk for dropping out and allow schools to intervene early.

Real Business Results
• Provided a cost-effective way for several school districts to have access to sophisticated analytics tools for measuring performance
• Helped enable small, remote and less-affluent districts to have the same access to technology as larger districts
• Improved reporting accuracy to provincial and federal governments
