Case Study

Qualcomm Inc. is a leader in developing and delivering digital wireless communications products and services based on code division multiple access (CDMA) and other technologies. The company was established in 1985, and today its technologies contribute to the convergence of mobile communications and consumer electronics and are central to the rapid adoption and growth of 3G and next-generation wireless networking around the world. Headquartered in San Diego, the company holds more than 13,000 US patents for wireless technologies licensed by more than 180 communications equipment manufacturers worldwide.

The Opportunity
With more than 150 manufacturing, sales and corporate locations worldwide, Qualcomm is a major player in the development and manufacture of chipsets and other technologies used in mobile phones, tablets, GPS units and other devices. Meeting the needs of a rapidly- evolving market requires detailed planning, but the company lacked a fully-integrated approach to analysis that could predict demand and support smart decisions about engineering, production, sales and finances.

What Makes It Smarter
The product lifecycle in the wireless sector is practically measured in months, as consumers continually demand better performance and functionality from their mobile devices. This manufacturer of chipsets and other enabling technologies is able, for the first time, to make rapid and accurate decisions about the complex interactions between engineering, production, sales and product delivery in a global environment. Deep analysis in near real time of data gleaned from 12 major enterprise applications is delivering new predictive insights into the relationships between market demand, technology development, price and cost. Using “what-if” scenarios, analysts can develop optimal five-year plans, such as wafer and test capacities and cost models, to meet customers’ perfor- mance and price targets and at the same time allocate production to facilities in ways that balance capabilities and cost. Also, for the first
time, pricing reporting and analysis are integrated into a single view, with all pricing inputs, rebate calculations and business rules visible across all customers and products.

Real Business Results
• Reduced reliance on IT support by end users through self-service analysis and reporting
• Streamlined processes, reduced uncertainty and reduced risks by using a single analytics platform
• Enabled an integrated management system that included creating a management plan that linked top level strategy to departmental plans
