Case Study

Igualatorio Médico Quirúrgico (IMQ), based in Bilbao, Spain, provides health insurance to more than 300,000 people in the Basque region of Spain. The company consists of two business units: one that facilitates the insurance business and one that conducts health and welfare services. IMQ works with more than 2,600 doctors and owns several hospitals and medical centers throughout the region.

Challenge

As the company developed its plans to open a new hospital, IMQ sought a partner that could help it implement an optimized data center within the new facility. The organization also needed expert advice for improving IT management processes, including IT security, business resiliency and available capacity sharing between the medical and insurance divisions. Unfortunately, the building architects, unfamiliar with the requirements for a sophisticated IT infrastructure, underestimated the hospital’s IT space needs, allocating only a network server area instead of room for a much-needed IT data center. IMQ soon recognized that the hospital required robust data center capabilities to serve the technological and collaborative needs of doctors and staff so that they could better deliver superior, coordinated patient care.

Solution

IBM Global Technology Services – Integrated Technology Services provided a comprehensive, multipronged solution to address IMQ’s IT needs. IBM Data Center and Facilities Strategy Services and IBM Server Optimization and Integration Services teams identified an appropriate space within the hospital floor plan and then designed the architecture for the new data center’s Intel processor–based servers, IBM Power Systems™ servers and a data storage environment. IBM Networking Strategy and Optimization Services coordinated with the other IBM teams and designed a high-level architecture of the LAN and WAN infrastructures for the new hospital data center. To maintain optimal operational conditions, the IBM Service Management Strategy and Design Services team assessed the client’s existing service management processes and IT organization and recommended new models. The team also offered advice regarding system management improvements that included process standardization and IT governance principle integration. Finally, to create new levels of business resiliency for each of the company’s business units, IBM Resiliency Consulting Services designed and implemented a backup and recovery environment for the company’s hospital and insurance IT environments, creating new business resiliency capabilities for both entities.

Benefits

  • Defined an IT roadmap that supports major strategic initiatives, including standardization and service management
  • Implemented a scalable infrastructure design to address near-term data center requirements and future business needs
  • Lowered IT costs with a scalable environment that the client can use as a disaster recovery site for its insurance business
