"IBM provided a superior business continuity solution that helps us efficiently protect and manage our infrastructure to meet customer availability demands." - Manager system management IBM System z server, Zentrum für Informationsverarbeitung und Informationstechnik
Zentrum für Informationsverarbeitung und Informationstechnik (ZIVIT)
Zentrum für Informationsverarbeitung und Informationstechnik (ZIVIT) supplies a nationwide IT infrastructure, develops and maintains custom software and provides 24-hour operation of central administration as well as consulting services for the German federal finance administration. The company’s more than 1,300 employees support BundOnline, an initiative of the German government that provides online services and forms to citizens. ZIVIT’s services include reporting, calculating and managing government employee payroll, child benefits, customs transactions and duty collections.
To serve its German government customer, ZIVIT needed resilient systems to meet stringent IT service delivery requirements.
IBM® Global Technology Services® designed a comprehensive resiliency solution using IBM Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex™/PPRC technology with the xDR feature for business continuity.
The continuity and recovery solution helped ZIVIT obtain an immediate recovery point regardless of operating system.

The company’s more than 1,300 employees support BundOnline, an initiative of the German government that provides online services and forms to citizens. ZIVIT’s services include reporting, calculating and managing government employee payroll, child benefits, customs transactions and duty collections. More than 100,000 agency users rely on ZIVIT applications and systems technology for year-round daily processing requirements.
The ZIVIT IT infrastructure consists of two IBM zEnterprise® 196 (z196) mainframes running the IBM z/OS® V1.12 operating system and six IBM System Storage® DS8300 devices and two third-party storage subsystems organized in a multisite IBM Parallel Sysplex® environment. To support its computing needs across several locations, the company has more than 400 Linux guest operating systems using the IBM z/VM® virtualization environment on the z196 mainframes. Given the volume and nature of the information it manages and its zeal for continuous improvement, ZIVIT wanted to improve data availability, disaster recovery capabilities and data integrity within its hardware environment.
To meet its goals, ZIVIT engaged IBM Global Technology Services – Integrated Technology Services to evaluate its infrastructure. The IBM team recommended and implemented an IBM Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS)/Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC) solution with a Multiplatform Resiliency for System z® (xDR) feature. The client deployed the solution into two Parallel Sysplex environments, one for testing and one for production, using two z196 mainframes and four System Storage DS8300 devices linked by PPRC mirroring technology. The xDR feature within the GDPS/PPRC mainframe solution provides automated failover and rapid recovery of the client’s business-critical applications and data, including those solutions running in a Linux operating system environment on the System z platform.
Additionally, the IBM team provided project management, planning, implementation and testing services as well as systems programmer training, as required. The Linux operating system integration into the GDPS/PPRC environment was a milestone, as it is only a second-of-its-kind implementation in Germany.
● Provides automatic failover with systems recovery in less than one hour without data loss
● Improves data availability and consistency resulting from planned and unplanned system outages
● Integrates Linux operating system technology with the xDR feature, providing greater infrastructure flexibility
