Projecting 20 percent reduction of development time and costs with IBM WebSphere Liberty Profile

Published on 15-Nov-2012

"I am excited about the small footprint of the Liberty profile and the fact that I was able to download, install and have it running and integrated with my Eclipse environment in under 15 minutes. That alone saves us a day per developer." - Vlad Khin, Software Architect, FJA-US

Customer:
FJA-US

Industry:
Computer Services

Deployment country:
Germany

Overview

FJA-US is a software development consulting firm providing software to the insurance industry. The company is a subsidiary of COR&FJA Group based in Stuttgart, Germany with 1,200 employees in 22 countries worldwide.

Business need:
The FJA-US developers have difficulties predicting whether their web services will perform in their customers’ WebSphere environments because they do not have WebSphere Application Server on their machines. The full versions of WebSphere Application server are too big for the desktops and laptops. Startup times are 5-10 minutes—which immediately puts the developers off given their tight schedules.

Solution:
A much better scenario opened up when FJA-US took advantage of the opportunity to try the beta version of IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.5 Liberty Profile. The Liberty Profile is optimized for developer productivity and web/mobile application deployment. Its restart time is under five seconds, and with its small footprint and ease of use, the Liberty Profile is designed for developers.

Benefits:
Projected 20 percent reduction in development time and costs; Ability to develop in same environment as target environment; 15-minute installation time saves one day per developer

Case Study

FJA-US is a software development consulting firm providing software to the insurance industry. The company is a subsidiary of COR&FJA Group based in Stuttgart, Germany with 1,200 employees in 22 countries worldwide.

The need
FJA-US offers insurance companies a modular portfolio of functions that are exposed as web services. The products combine redundant business processes into reusable services that can be easily modified according to a company’s requirements. FJA-US enables insurance companies to develop new products quickly while providing them with the flexibility to pick and choose which functions they want to incorporate.

FJA-US developers work in an open source environment using Apache Tomcat containers on desktops and laptops. Approximately 50 percent of the company’s customers use IBM WebSphere® Application Server. The FJA-US developers have difficulties predicting whether their web services will perform in their customers’ WebSphere environments because they do not have WebSphere Application Server on their machines. The full versions of WebSphere Application server are too big for the desktops and laptops. Boot times are 5-10 minutes—which immediately turns the developers off given their tight time schedules.

WebSphere customers catch problems early enough, but the company wants the ability to develop in the target environment to be able to identify problems at the QA stage.

The solution
A much more appealing scenario unfolded when FJA-US took advantage of the opportunity to try a beta version of IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.5 Liberty Profile. The Liberty profile is optimized for developer productivity and web/mobile application deployment. Its restart time is under five seconds, and with its small footprint and ease of use, the Liberty profile is designed for developers building applications that do not require the full Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) environment of traditional enterprise application server profiles.

“I’m really excited about the small footprint of the Liberty profile,” says Vlad Khin, software architect, FJA-US. “I was able to download, install and have it running and integrated with my Eclipse environment in under 15 minutes compared to the day it would take to install the full version. That alone saves us one day per developer.”

With the automated testing and continuous integration provided by WebSphere Application Server 8.5 Liberty Profile, developers can determine whether new features will work in a WebSphere environment. “I would say that the Liberty profile is the way to go for most development teams, especially if they have multiple locations,” says Khin. “I have development teams in Hungary and Portugal, and if I were to give them anything bigger than the Liberty profile it would be a tremendous challenge because I don’t know how powerful their machines are.”

With abundant technical support from IBM during the beta phase, Khin has had all of his questions answered. In addition, the content on the WebSphere Application Server Development Forum has been very helpful. “I have had my share of frustration trying to find relevant documentation and knowledge for open source solutions,” says Khin. “What I’ve seen on IBM developerWorks® has been really impressive.”

The Benefits

  • Projected 20 percent reduction in development time and costs
  • Ability to develop in same environment as target environment
  • Less than 15-minute installation time
