Case Study

Headquartered in Galveston, Texas, American National Insurance Company (ANICO) is a multiline carrier with more than 100 years of experience. Its core businesses are life insurance, annuities, health and property and casualty insurance. The company and its subsidiaries serve approximately eight million policyholders throughout the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and other territories. As of December 31, 2011, ANICO had more than 3,200 employees and total assets of USD22.5 billion.

Challenge
To maintain strong, positive agent relationships, ANICO launched an agent portal in 2000. At the time, packaged solutions were expensive and limited in functionality, so the company decided to develop its own. By 2011, ANICO completed implementation of an IBM® WebSphere® Portal solution for its customers and planned on moving the homegrown agent portal to the same platform.

An immediate concern was mobile access. Most agents were already accessing the portal with their smartphones and other devices, but screen views were poor and navigation was difficult. ANICO sought a rapid, nondisruptive way to make the existing portal mobile-friendly without impeding the overarching strategy to change platforms.

Solution
In 2011, ANICO executives were invited to a web seminar by IBM and IBM Advanced Business Partner Streebo, which demonstrated how IBM WebSphere Portal software templates and a defined project plan help jump-start portal solutions. Streebo followed up with a proof of concept (POC) to show ANICO how to mobile-enable its portal infrastructure with minimal change to back-end coding. “We had mobile access on our radar but accelerated the initiative after seeing what Streebo could do,” says Deanna Walton, assistant vice president of field systems at ANICO.

ANICO relied on Streebo expertise to roll out a mobile capability for the agent’s inquiry application using Streebo insurance applications, WebSphere Portal software templates and model-based development capabilities and prebuilt connectors from IBM Web Experience Factory software. “We were licensed for IBM Web Experience Factory software as part of our customer portal initiative, so we decided to investigate how we could use what we had,” says Walton.

Streebo quickly integrated its mobile applications for insurance with the existing ANICO database and information sources. There was no need to design, program and test applications for each mobile device. The IBM solution automatically generated the form factors and usability features necessary to support the designated devices. The solution was ready for deployment within eight weeks.

ANICO found that adoption was near-real time for many agents. “On the very first day alone, we had about 100 agents access the new mobile site option … without any company communication about the enhanced capability,” says Walton.

Going forward, ANICO will use WebSphere Portal software to accelerate the changeover of the agent portal to the IBM WebSphere Portal platform.
