Case Study

This technology institute provides full- and part-time degree programs in technologies and trades. The institute is one of the region’s largest tertiary institutions, serving more than 25,000 students.

Challenge
The small IT department at the institute develops and maintains a growing infrastructure composed largely of custom applications designed for the institution’s evolving business needs. An inability to collaborate effectively with the organization’s business departments hindered these efforts. In addition, process inefficiencies, such as manual and redundant data entry, added unnecessary time and complexity to ongoing application design and maintenance.

Both issues inhibited developing and implementing the applications necessary to achieve strategic IT initiatives critical to the organization’s long-term success. The technology division sought an IT platform that would allow it to develop more applications faster and in closer collaboration with business colleagues.

Solution
The institute implemented a suite of IBM® WebSphere® software to enhance intradepartmental communication and support overall process improvement. IBM WebSphere Process Server and IBM WebSphere Integration Developer software help optimize processes and resources within the organization’s service-oriented architecture (SOA). IBM WebSphere Service Registry and Repository software provides visibility into the SOA and delivers workflow approval functionality.

The IBM solution provides the institute with organizationwide data integration and visibility into its IT processes, improving institutional agility. In addition, because both business and IT users now have a platform for collaborating throughout the development process, new applications are being developed faster and are much more closely aligned with business needs.

Benefits
· Speeds development of critical customized IT applications and reduces maintenance time required for previously developed applications
· Enables organizational agility, productivity gains and cost reductions
· Improves collaboration among IT and business departments, enabling the development of applications aligned more closely to business need
