Catalina Marketing provides shopper-driven marketing solutions to retailers, consumer products companies and healthcare providers. The company uses a vast and sophisticated database to collect information from points of sale across the United States, giving its customers extensive insight into consumer preferences and buying behaviors. This information is then used to run targeted marketing programs, including in-store incentives, advertisements and loyalty programs.

Business need:
Catalina’s major business need was faster and better analytical capabilities. Specifically, they were having difficulties analyzing data at the consumer, product and transaction level, which resulted in less targeted offerings. Other issues surrounding Catalina were an excessive data footprint, and a need to consolidate their multiple DBAs which were critical to their current data warehouse.

Solution:
Catalina is using IBM Netezza data warehouse appliances to support their retail direct online customer loyalty application, in-store coupon delivery and health resources business. Catalina has 100s of TB of data running on Netezza, with more than 600 users.

Catalina Marketing's VP of Business Intelligence Solutions explains how the company is staying ahead of the curve by leveraging the Netezza TwinFin analytic appliance.

Catalina is ahead of the curve from a technology standpoint because of Netezza and the advancements in their technology, in both hardware and software; this has allowed Catalina to improve performance on a massive scale.

Netezza continues to respond to our challenges for performance and functionality in each of their releases. TwinFin is a logical progression in the Netezza platforms.

The engineering complexities that we used to face in our large scale data warehouses have all but disappeared over the last several years.

TwinFin marks a new chapter in Netezza’s hardware life and really opens the door for future application deployment on the platform.

Now that we’ve partnered with Netezza for almost 5 years, we certainly understand how high the bar has been raised. We see the liberation of our organization in both the IT and the business to move forward together at the same pace.

Netezza continues to deliver on the promise of simplicity and manageability in the platform.
