“With Tivoli Provisioning Manager, we can do more testing in less time than was previously possible. As a result, we can identify potential problems earlier and deliver a higher quality of service to our end users.”
— A. Harry Williams, Director of Technology and Systems, Marist College

Founded in 1929, Marist College is home to approximately 4,100 traditional undergraduates, 1,100 adult continuing education students and 1,000 graduate students.

Challenge
From online testing to collaborative learning environments, technology helps Marist College enhance teaching and learning. Because of this, any time applications are changed or added, Marist’s IT team thoroughly tests the applications prior to deployment to prevent problems. With a large number of application changes made each year, IT staff experienced that existing processes were increasing the time and cost of testing. IT staff often had to purchase new servers to keep up with testing needs and maintain a pool of extra servers. This could add weeks to application deployment and increased costs substantially. And, because IT staff had to manually install a wide range of operating systems, middleware technologies and applications, setting up test environments was time-consuming and error-prone.

Solution
A longtime IBM customer, Marist College worked with IBM Global Technology Services–System Provisioning Services team to implement IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager 5.1 on IBM BladeCenter running Linux. Through its Optimize Test offering, IBM Global Technology Services staff helped ensure a smooth implementation in less than three weeks. With Tivoli Provisioning Manager, IT staff can dynamically allocate hardware resources and share test environments across multiple applications. As a result, the college can maximize its existing server resources to reduce costs and avoid having servers unutilized, waiting idle for the next application to be deployed. The software also automatically provisions the test environment to relieve IT staff of this tedious process. Now IT staff can begin testing the same day an application arrives. This enables the college to test more applications in less time, improving the quality of service delivered and helping IT staff respond more quickly to professor and student needs.

Benefits
  • Faster time to market of new services
  • Increased staff productivity
  • Improved service quality
  • Reduced costs by optimizing server resources
