Background
Headquartered in Atlanta, SunTrust Bank, Inc., is one of the nation’s largest banking organizations, with total assets of US$181 billion, more than 1,600 branches, and more than 34,000 employees. The bank serves a broad range of consumer, commercial, corporate and institutional clients and operates an extensive distribution network, primarily in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Challenge
SunTrust Bank set out to reap more returns on its investment in its IT infrastructure, including the memory, storage and servers in its database environment. At the same time, SunTrust wanted to manage risk and compliance and increase the productivity of its database administrators.

Solution
To achieve these goals, SunTrust upgraded its IBM System p5p575 servers from IBM DB2 8 to the new DB2 9 data server.

Benefits
With the deep compression capabilities of DB2 9, SunTrust is seeing:

• Average compression of 83 percent on the data warehouse tables

• Projected initial cost savings of more than US$2 million

• Ongoing savings of US$500,000 per year

SunTrust is also finding that DB2 9 provides:

• The ability to install multiple DB2 versions and fix packs on the same computer

• Table partitioning benefits of increased query performance via partition elimination

• Self Tuning Memory Manager (STMM) senses the underlying workload and tunes the memory based on need

• Performance and scalability enhancements

To manage risk and compliance, SunTrust Bank will be implementing the new Label Based Access Control feature of DB2 9. Also, the new Security Administration Authority will allow SunTrust to give its enterprise risk management group the ability to control security within the database.

SunTrust expects to meet its goal of increased DBA productivity using the STMM and automatic storage enhancement features of DB2 9.
