Skidmore Sales & Distributing Company

Industry:
Wholesale Distribution & Services

Deployment country:
United States

IBM Business Partner:
DPS, Inc.

Overview

Skidmore Sales & Distributing Company (Skidmore) has been a distributor and broker of ingredients for food processors and manufacturers for 44 years. The company handles ingredients from more than 150 different suppliers, adhering to rigid standards for those ingredients, following strict warehouse and truck sanitation guidelines, and performing regular audits of its facilities and procedures.

Business need:
Skidmore implemented a document imaging solution that enabled it to dramatically improve the handling of critical food-quality documents. But the high volume of documents still required manual sorting and assembly during the picking process. The volatility of the economy was causing frequent price increases, which demanded the frequent generation of notification letters to customers. Skidmore was looking for a way to further automate both processes.

Solution:
IBM Business Partner DPS, Inc. undertook the upgrade of the Skidmore production box to an IBM POWER5™ platform, with standard IBM software, including maintenance and support services. The existing customer order processing, purchasing, receiving, inventory control and warehouse management applications were deployed on the IBM POWER5 platform. The document imaging solution continued to run on IBM System x® servers.

Benefits:
• Integrates enterprise resource planning, warehouse management and document imaging applications to improve the accuracy of customer documentation • Enables warehouse staff to handle an increase in volume by eliminating the need to pull packing documents • Reduces order turnaround times and expense by automating manual document handling processes

Logic was added to create customer notification emails as a byproduct of price updates.
