Since 1934, the Sir Mortimer B. Davis - Jewish General Hospital (JGH), a McGill University teaching hospital, has provided “Care for All,” serving patients from diverse religious, linguistic and cultural backgrounds in Montreal, throughout Quebec and beyond.
Challenge
JGH needed to replace its aging communications system. Its existing system required the nursing station’s unit agents to use the overhead paging system to communicate with the assigned healthcare professional when a patient called for help, which disturbed up to 30 patients each time. Plus, the system made it difficult for staff to communicate with one another. JGH sought a wireless solution that could help address its communications issues.
Solution
JGH engaged IBM Global Technology Services to implement a wireless solution using technology from IBM Business Partner Symbol Technologies (now Motorola).
The IBM team installed wireless access points throughout the hospital, allowing staff to begin using mobile phones and handheld computing devices to communicate with each other and gain instant access to patient information. The IBM Global Technology Services group also implemented appropriate security measures to help protect patient data, adding a security server that is designed to prevent unauthorized devices from accessing the network.
Lastly, the IBM Global Technology Services group performed tests to make sure that the new wireless technology would not interfere with JGH’s medical equipment.
Benefits
• Helps facilitate quicker patient care decisions and better collaboration among healthcare workers
• Enables patients to communicate directly with their assigned healthcare professionals 24x7
• Frees up staff from having to stay at nurses’ stations to return calls, as they can now travel within the wireless zone
