“Being committed to the safety of the consumers using our pharmaceuticals, we were happy to find IBM’s proven track and trace solution. Now we’re ahead of the competition in meeting California’s serialization regulation and can attract more trading partners because of it.” —Golden State Medical Supply

Established in 1986, GSMS Incorporated (GSMS) is a wholesale pharmaceuticals distributor, contract manufacturer and packaging company that serves public and private hospitals and mail-order pharmacies.

Challenge
Headquartered in California, GSMS was subject to drug pedigree legislation set forth by the California Board of Pharmacy. The regulation requires each item to have a unique identification and pedigree that tracks its source, transaction ownership and authentication information.

GSMS wanted to differentiate its services from the thousands of wholesalers and manufacturers and gain an advantage in the industry by implementing an innovative solution to meet pedigree compliance ahead of the competition.

Solution
GSMS engaged IBM to deliver a pharmaceutical track and trace solution. Built on IBM WebSphere® RFID Information Center and IBM WebSphere Premises Server platforms, the IBM solution helps protect the integrity of pharmaceutical products and improve patient safety.

The track and trace solution provides a one-stop-shop for unique identification—also known as serialization—strategy services, software, servers, and deployment and integration services. WebSphere RFID Information Center software’s IBM ePedigree Feature integrates serialization into existing packing lines and distribution-center workflows. It also shares data between GSMS, suppliers and customers to let them know when packages are shipped and received.

Benefits
• Enables the client to meet the emerging regulations well ahead of the enforcement date
• Provides the technology infrastructure it needs to offer compliance services to existing and potential trading partners in the pharmaceutical industry
• Improves its competitive position by expanding its supplier and customer networks
• Increases patient safety by validating and authenticating every drug that passes through the supply chain
