Case Study

Freedomone mobile was spun off of sourcevolution, an IT consulting firm based in Montreal and founded in 2003. The company spent three years developing freedomone, a context-aware multichannel communication platform. The company has a skilled integration team to help businesses make organizational changes in a professional and efficient manner.

Creating an interactive communication platform

To create its interactive communication platform, freedomone mobile first needed to consider how the companies it serves connect with their customers. “The customer today has two to three email accounts, a smartphone with three distinct digital channels, the mobile app, SMS and voicemail,” says Pierre Paul Samson, cofounder and chief technical officer of freedomone mobile. “Customers are engaged with social networks. And most people have a Facebook account, professionals have a LinkedIn account and a lot of people have Twitter accounts. What we have today is a multichannel customer. And so what freedomone mobile does is connect the business to the multichannel customer.”

Freedomone mobile began developing its platform on the common channels such as SMS and email. The company next needed to develop a mobile application component. Because many of its customers are large enterprises and financial services companies, freedomone mobile needed to create a security-rich mobile application designed for reliability. The organization also needed to be able to develop and maintain mobile applications for multiple devices and platforms. “Developing mobile apps, developing in the communication space is definitely an ongoing journey,” says Samson. “It never stops. There are new channels that keep popping up. Some actually die and some actually revolutionize the way we do business and the way our society actually runs.”

Choosing a mobile development solution from IBM

As the basis for its mobile application, freedomone mobile chose IBM Worklight software. “The freedomone solution is all based on IBM WebSphere® technology,” says Samson. “So we are leveraging IBM WebSphere Application Server and the IBM DB2® relational database. And when we developed our interactive communication platform, we saw mobile apps as a channel among a number of other channels. But the mobile app channel was huge and we were looking for a strategic partner to undertake that piece. And IBM did.”

Using Worklight software, freedomone mobile can code once and deploy that code to multiple devices and operating systems. “I think the commonality between the freedomone platform and Worklight software is fundamentally based on a philosophy that we should code once and be able to deploy on multiple operating systems and multiple devices,” says Samson. “That philosophy brings a lot of benefits to the large enterprise in terms of cutting costs, in terms of development cycles, and also cuts cost in terms of maintenance and addresses security, which is key when you have transactional mobile apps. Those elements are key and they bring a lot of value to the enterprise client and subsequently also to the customers.”

Cutting development costs by as much as 70 percent

The company integrated the Worklight application into the freedomone platform quickly and easily. “The beauty of the Worklight Server when we look at it as a component is its integration value,” says Samson. “When we actually bridged the freedomone platform with Worklight, it only took two developers a total of four days to go from integration to a full running prototype.”

After the organization integrated the Worklight application into the freedomone platform, the solution continued to help freedomone mobile cut development time and costs. “On one project that we did for a large Canadian airline, it basically cut development costs by about 70 percent when you look at how many devices it needs to talk to,” says Samson. “The reason Worklight is a great tool for developers is that it has a lot of flexibility in terms of what scripting it allows us to do. It’s configuration-friendly and it gives us a canvas whereby we can develop really cool customer or employee mobile experiences.”

An additional benefit to using Worklight software for mobile application development is that it lets freedomone platform developers proactively deploy updates to users’ devices, eliminating reliance on app stores, such as the iTunes Store or the Google Play store.

Winning new customers through integration with Worklight software

By offering the Worklight solution, freedomone mobile won two significant customers. “From a client engagement perspective, what was really cool was that we have been able to have a couple of wins because of the freedomone integration with Worklight,” says Samson. “So, from a business perspective, we have gained two large clients, one a recognized international airline, and the other one a recognized international bank. And the Worklight integration was a key factor in winning those two accounts.”

The organization plans to use the Worklight solution to continue to meet its customers’ needs. “So how do we allow a large enterprise customer to reduce their development cost, reduce their maintenance cost and provide a great experience for their customers?” asks Samson. “We do that with a combination of things. We keep innovating our freedomone platform and we leverage the same kind of thinking, the same kind of philosophy Worklight brings to IT development, mobile development and deployment, and ensuing maintenance.”
