Case Study

The largest private hospital network in Brazil, Rede D’Or São Luiz consists of 27 hospitals and 25,000 employees. The network handles approximately 2.2 million emergency visits, 150,000 surgeries, 208,000 admissions and 23,500 births annually.

Integrating new acquisitions

Through acquisitions, Rede D’Or São Luiz has grown rapidly in recent years and has faced the challenge of continuing to offer patients high-quality treatments while maintaining exceptional cost control. Achieving this goal requires reliable information systems to facilitate appropriate resource use. In the case of Rede D’Or São Luiz, a primary issue was integrating the different systems originating from each acquired unit to give staff access to the information they need.

Eliminating point-to-point integrations

Rede D’Or São Luiz had already made an attempt to implement an integration solution from a major supplier in the IT marketplace. Because of the complexity of the implementation, however, the network was forced to abandon the solution. After receiving an excellent recommendation from BTG Pactual Bank, an investor in the hospital network and a user of IBM WebSphere software, and reading references of similar successful projects in Brazil and throughout the world, Rede D’Or São Luiz chose a solution based on IBM WebSphere Message Broker and IBM WebSphere Service Registry and Repository software. The organization evaluated the solution and adopted it to eliminate point-to-point connections. “The IBM solution showed a high level of reliability and maturity, as well as excellent resources for support and, even better, a very attractive cost,” says Marlon Oliveira, chief information officer (CIO) of Rede D’Or São Luiz.

Before deploying IBM WebSphere Message Broker software, the network used a point-to-point method for integrating the applications within its facilities. This system was cumbersome and difficult to maintain, and it complicated the implementation of new features. Now it’s possible to exchange information between the hospitals and the back-end operations with greater efficiency. “With IBM WebSphere Message Broker, we can handle high volumes of information in a more productive way. We are reducing maintenance costs and developing with more agility new solutions to improve patient services,” explains Oliveira.

To facilitate system management, the network also adopted IBM WebSphere Service Registry and Repository software, a repository that catalogs the details of the services used by the institution. It’s now possible for Rede D’Or São Luiz to visualize the performance and dependencies of the services, evaluate the impact of occasional changes and, by also using the IBM WebSphere Message Broker software, meet service contracts and adhere to messaging policies.

The network says it chose the solution from IBM because of the reliability and maturity of the system integration tool, as attested by reading about similar projects in Brazil and throughout the world. In addition, the network believed that IBM would offer excellent support resources for the solution.

Simplifying integrations leads to lower administrative costs

Today, Rede D’Or São Luiz can automate communication among the various operational units, handling millions of messages more efficiently. Not only that, but the financial systems of the different hospitals are integrated into the cost center, reducing occasional risks and facilitating greater control over the group’s expenses. This strong integration between the units is securing lower administrative costs, accelerating billing processes and, consequently, improving the flow of income.

According to Oliveira, the IBM solution allows greater insight into the institution’s available services. “We can monitor it, measure the performance, facilitate the auditing processes and better predict where we should make investments,” says Oliveira, adding that the plan for the future is to extend the service bus beyond Rede D’Or São Luiz to include laboratories and health insurance companies.

The network hopes to provide benefits to patients that include, for example, shorter wait times for the authorization of medical procedures. In addition, the network is implementing new, more advanced integration for requests and results of exams in emergencies, with the objective of delivering results within 20 minutes. “With that, we plan to reduce the test request time by half. And that will only be possible with a service bus with high availability like those offered by IBM WebSphere Message Broker,” concludes Oliveira.

Financial and strategic benefits for the network include:
● Improved service for the patient
● Reduced maintenance and development costs
● Improved flow of income
● Simplified auditing, monitoring and managing

Operational benefits for the network include:
● Greater operational efficiency
● Reduced operational risks
● Faster solution development
● Improved service reuse
● Potential to expand existing integrations
