Case Study

Founded in Hong Kong, Open 4 Business Online (O4BO) is a Software as a Service (SaaS) provider in the Philippines that helps small-to-midsize businesses that lack in-house IT expertise gain access to an integrated platform of cost-effective, open source business software.

Challenge

As chief technical officer (CTO) of IBM Business Partner Corent Technology, Mike Oliver helped businesses of all sizes easily provision, manage, monitor and bill SaaS customers using Corent’s comprehensive SaaS operations management environment. He saw first-hand that small-to-midsize businesses were underserved in the SaaS space and recognized an opportunity to address an emerging market. Oliver also worked with IBM on a multitenancy program that included the IBM Rational Team Concert™ solution and IBM Cognos® software, ultimately winning the 2012 Best Cloud Product of The Year award at TechAmerica’s 19th Annual High-Tech Innovation Awards conference.

Armed with insights from his customer experiences at Corent and knowledge gleaned from teaming with IBM, Oliver founded O4BO in 2012 and developed a platform using Corent’s SurPaaS™ to provide businesses of any size with access to customized, open source business software solutions, including ERP and CRM. Because of the risk-averse nature of its customers, O4BO knew the platform had to run on a security-rich, reliable infrastructure as a service (IaaS) platform that would provide cost-effective solutions for budget-constrained businesses. To effectively address its customers’ concerns, O4BO needed to build its platform on a credible cloud infrastructure. “It simply wasn’t possible to start a business in this climate without the advantages of true multitenancy and cloud infrastructure,” said Oliver.

Solution

O4BO teamed with IBM Global Technology Services – Integrated Technology Services and Corent Technology to develop, test and host its operations on an IBM SmartCloud Enterprise architecture. The company can now integrate multiple applications, regardless of hosting location, into a solution that allows customers to swiftly access up to six seamlessly integrated business applications using a portal hosted on the reliable IBM SmartCloud Enterprise infrastructure. By eliminating the need to procure, set up and manage a physical hardware infrastructure, O4BO sped time to market and progressed from inception to production in less than a year. The IBM SmartCloud architecture helps O4BO reduce IT costs and pass savings to its customers with a pay-per-use model that simplifies administration, eliminating the need to outsource 50 percent of its IT workload to expensive contractors. Additionally, O4BO is capitalizing on a security-rich, highly available IBM architecture that establishes credibility with risk-averse small and midsize businesses that trust IBM.

Benefits
● Reins in IT costs with a pay-per-use model that simplifies administration, allowing for a 50 percent reduction in IT support costs
● Capitalizes on a security-rich, highly available IBM architecture that establishes credibility with risk-averse small and midsize businesses
● Increases speed to market for new services by eliminating the need to procure and manage a physical hardware infrastructure
