Business Resiliency, Storage Consolidation, Virtualization, Virtualization - Storage

Overview

Established in Egypt in 1956, Dar Al-Handasah is a multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy with approximately 6,300 employees in 40 offices across 30 countries. The organization provides a full range of services related to the design, construction and operation of infrastructure such as airports, hospitals, highways, shopping malls, oil refineries, factories and office buildings.

Business need:
With storage needs doubling every few years, Dar Al-Handasah needed to rationalize and optimize its storage infrastructure. Performance, capacity, cost and ease of management needed to be addressed.

Solution:
Deployed two IBM® Storwize® V7000 storage systems with built-in tools for data migration, thin-provisioning and auto data tiering; virtualized legacy storage systems within the V7000 environment.

Benefits:
Backups run 25 percent faster; increased performance of existing storage; cut floorspace requirements by 75 percent; improved efficiency of capacity utilization; delayed investments in extra capacity.

Mahmoud Amin, Head of IT Department, Dar Al-Handasah

Dar Al-Handasah has been established in the year of 1956 by Dr. Kamal Shair, and it started in Beirut. And since then, it has been expanding all over the place. Dar Al-Handasah is currently having about 6,300 employees and five design offices, 30 countries with 40 site offices and the branch offices.

We are having lots of projects all over the Middle East, like road projects, design supervision. We are having lots of airport designs, terminals like Terminal 3 in Cairo.

We do a lot of traffic pattern analysis and route analysis on roads, how to deal with a larger amount of people getting into one building, getting out.

Mainly, our end product is a drawing that we design and we have do deliver. This needs to run on the IT infrastructure platform with the proper security and integrity and integration.

The challenge was clear and was huge, the capacity needs to be doubled every few years, the performance has to be increased to be able to cope with the stress on our servers that are sending the data. At the same time, you need to have secured data. All those technologies have to be thought of upfront in order to provide the solution when needed.

And for this, you had to look for storage to satisfy your needs from the performance, from the capacity, from the expansion, easy to manage. We had to consolidate all this in one interface and get unified administrative experience.

The new solution was IBM medium size Storwize 7000 from IBM. This is a virtualization layer that stands between the users or the applications and the storage system. It checks for the redundancy in different files and does that on the hardware level. And this is expected to reduce the money we do invest in acquiring new media all the time.

One of the biggest challenges for any IT department is to be up and running all the time. Having the required resilience subsystem in the storage, we haven’t experienced any downtime due to the storage in the past few years. It is very stable, very robust. And even if there is a challenge or there is an issue, the system is self-corrective.

Another advantage is having, what's called, a multi-tier whereby the systems self analyze the I/Os and see if there is a lot in any of the LUNs or volume we are having. It moves it, using the Easy Tier technology, from the LUN that’s having challenges in the performance to a higher one, like moving it from SATA to SAS or from SAS to solid-state drive.

We stopped receiving any claims regarding performance; we stopped any claims more or less regarding the expanding. Adding more and more capacity is always performing in a totally transparent matter.

With all the challenges that’s happening in the market and all that’s happening, the recession and everything around the world, the IT department should not be asking for more and more budget like it used before. We have to cope with the business needs still with a limited budget. So this comes to innovation like the V7000 that can fit exactly in this position.
