Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona Public Service (APS) provides energy and utility services to nearly one million households and businesses throughout southwestern Arizona. Additionally, the utility offers limited information services to the other businesses owned by its parent company, Pinnacle West.

Challenge
Handling the IT resources and infrastructure necessary for its business, APS needed to equip itself with the best resources to streamline its operations. The company chose the powerful IBM System z9® Enterprise Class mainframe to support its versatile IBM DB2® Universal Database™, Version 8 information management software. But to add greater ease-of-use to its supported IT environments, APS wanted a way to simplify the processing of DB2 batch jobs and to maintain a smooth batch production environment without a lot of manual changes.

Solution
APS teamed with IBM Business Partner Relational Architects International (RAI) to implement the Smart/RRSAF (Recovery Resource Services Attachment Facility) solution, which offers a simple way to connect applications to the DB2 data server for batch processing. The IBM z/OS® operating system–based middleware enables the client to run its DB2 batch applications with regular Job Control Language so that they look and behave like standard batch jobs. Backed by knowledgeable and responsive technicians, who are available around the clock, Smart/RRSAF software helps keep the client’s DB2 batch production running smoothly.

Using the IBM zSeries® 890 platform, RAI develops products that complement the IBM System z9 environment and further improve the life and value proposition of the ecosystem.

Benefits
- Simplifies DB2 batch processing and streamlines operations
- Enhances DB2 and System z9 capabilities
- Expands the commit scope to include all Recovery Resource Services (RRS)-compliant resources
