Case Study

Headquartered in Bangalore, Wipro Limited is one of the largest IT services companies in India, employing more than 115,000 people worldwide. As a division of Wipro Limited, Wipro IT Business provides IT services, business process outsourcing and product engineering services. Wipro IT Business is a Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 5-certified software services company and the first company outside the United States to receive the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Software Process Award. It is also an IBM Business Partner.

Wipro IT Business regularly works with customers that need to modernize existing IT systems to support new business requirements or new product lines. In many cases, these modernization efforts can have a significant effect on a company’s entire IT infrastructure. According to Annapoorna Venkateswaran, practice head, Wipro IT Business, “Customers need to understand the impact of such initiatives on the entire infrastructure, including applications, before they can proceed with them.”

Modernizing mainframe-based applications to support growth
One large company in the retail sector approached Wipro IT Business about a modernization project. The company runs approximately 70 percent of its applications on the IBM System z® platform, and it needed to modernize its mainframe-based applications in support of its growth strategy within the European marketplace. The project involved expanding the existing length of more than ten key fields across its
applications.

To complete the project, the customer needed to analyze approximately 3,000 Common Business Oriented Language (COBOL) programs and more than 10,000 copybooks to identify the given fields and where the fields need to be expanded. The company engaged Wipro IT Business to perform an extensive impact analysis for its mainframe-based retail application. Given the mission-critical nature of the system, the analysis was imperative for the customer’s business. Therefore, it had to be effective, extensive and complete.

Performing rapid analysis using IBM Rational software

After evaluating several potential solutions, Wipro IT Business worked with IBM Software Services for Rational and the IBM Rational Software Technical Sales team to implement IBM Rational Asset Analyzer software to help the retail customer modernize its mainframe-based applications. Sihab Kolaparambil, practice manager, Wipro IT Business, explains, “IBM Rational Asset Analyzer software is a robust and reliable tool that supports portfolio analysis of large applications in a short period of time, delivering accurate reports that give a clear understanding of the application at the business, architecture and program levels.”

The Rational Asset Analyzer application provides an impact analysis feature that enabled Wipro IT Business to analyze its customer’s applications in a short amount of time and quickly identify the fields that needed to be updated. The Rational Asset Analyzer software delivered accurate reports that gave Wipro IT Business and its customer a clear understanding of all applications and fields that the change would affect.

The IBM groups also provided a customized two-day training session to help Wipro IT Business and its customer get the most out of the Rational Asset Analyzer application.
The training included an overview of the Rational Asset Analyzer application’s architecture, installation, implementation and best practices. Additionally, because the analyzer application is so flexible, Wipro IT Business was able to configure it to meet its customer’s specific needs. Once the application was installed, the Wipro IT Business team used the Rational Asset Analyzer discussion forum on the IBM developerWorks® website to chat with other IBM clients and exchange information.

“IBM Rational Asset Analyzer software is an excellent tool for portfolio management. It saves a considerable amount of analysis effort, and it is a very useful tool for large maintenance and production support projects and teams. Further, it’s a handy tool for the due diligence and knowledge acquisition phase.”

Achieving comprehensive results with minimal effort
Without the Rational Asset Analyzer application, Wipro IT Business estimates that the modernization impact analysis would have taken one person 30 to 40 days. But Wipro IT Business was able to install and configure the Rational Asset Analyzer software and complete the analysis in just eight days, or 60 percent faster. The Rational tool enabled the company to refine its search results with flexible filter options and export the search results to Microsoft Excel software so its customer could further analyze and share the results. The application also helped the retail customer establish traceability and impact analysis among components such as copybooks, programs and jobs, and navigate all the components with the click of button.

Using Rational Asset Analyzer software enabled Wipro IT Business to provide its retail customer with a comprehensive impact analysis in a fraction of the time it would have taken using traditional mainframe search tools. The project was so successful that Wipro IT Business anticipates it will be able to use Rational Asset Analyzer software with other customers in the future. “IBM Rational Asset Analyzer software is an excellent tool
for portfolio management,” Venkateswaran says. “It saves a considerable amount of analysis effort, and it is a very useful tool for large maintenance and production support projects and teams. Further, it’s a handy tool for the due diligence and knowledge acquisition phase.”
