Case Study

Kingland Systems is an enterprise-class provider of technology services, delivering solutions and industry expertise in risk and compliance, master data management (MDM), and business analytics to large, multinational clients in the accounting, banking, financial, insurance, and healthcare markets. An IBM Business Partner for more than two decades, Kingland Systems helps its clients solve complex data and risk management problems.

The need to simplify application deployments

Companies can run Kingland Systems application solutions in their own data centers or through Kingland’s cloud-based data center hosting services. With either approach, Kingland Systems is eager to provide its clients with fast time to market.

“Delivering faster time to market and better value overall is critical to our client’s success and to our growth objectives,” says Matt Good, principal, software architect, Kingland Systems. “Within the past 16 years, the industry has seen IT management and administration costs jump from 20 percent of IT spending to more than 60 percent. We need to drive these costs down.”

These higher costs, Good says, have resulted from increasing IT complexity.

“I’ve witnessed firsthand how long it can take to install products because the work is spread across different teams and organizations—an application team, a middleware team, database team, and so on,” says Good. “There’s a lot of drudgery work involved in the deployment.”

Expert integrated systems transform deployments

According to Good, the IBM PureSystems™ family is changing this paradigm to help reduce deployment times and enable IT staff to focus on innovation instead of labor-intensive manual tasks.

“The IBM PureSystems family offers the industry the opportunity to radically simplify deployments,” he explains. “Installs that once took weeks and required numerous IT experts across different departments now can be completed in hours with the IBM PureSystems family.”

Take Kingland Systems’ 360 Data Enterprise Hub Master Data Management solution, for example. This platform, which is powered by IBM InfoSphere® software, helps banking and financial services companies effectively manage securities, entities, and hierarchies data—the industry’s most important reference data types for risk management, compliance and regulatory reporting processes.

By delivering the 360 Data Enterprise Hub on the IBM PureApplication System, Kingland is able to reduce deployment times by more than 95 percent.

“We had one pilot where we deployed the solution in two to four hours,” says Good. “Before it would take between five and 10 days and involve many more people. Now we just click the button, let it complete, check the logs, test it, and we’re done. For customers’ on-premise site, it can be very advantageous in reducing their deployment times. And for our data center hosting business, it gives us the opportunity to very rapidly spin up new instances, on demand, as we need.”

Patterns of expertise provide repeatable, best practice approach

Kingland began its work by leveraging the PureApplication System patterns of expertise to encapsulate best practices and expertise for deploying its 360 Data Enterprise Hub solution into a repeatable and deployable form.

“It took only two weeks to get up and running as far as the full automation of our products so we could leverage the patterns,” says Good. “Now it’s just a matter of selecting the parts from the library and clicking the button to deploy the application. It’s that easy.”

In addition to reducing deployment times, Good also expects clients to realize faster performance.

“The system can auto-correct based on workload,” says Good. “From a performance standpoint, we expect a 10 to 30 percent gain in performance.”

Keeping IT projects on time and under budget

For Good, faster deployments translate directly into cost savings.

“Costs are drastically reduced,” he says. “Before, we spent dozens, and sometimes hundreds of hours, on installation activities. We can potentially eliminate hours from the project plan and focus on other high-value tasks within the project that are more forward thinking.”

Cost savings will also come from consolidating workloads on a single scalable platform.

“PureSystems consolidates a lot of hardware- and software-related activities all into one cloud-ready system,” he adds. “Consolidation helps reduce maintenance and administrative costs of the technology itself.”
