Overview

Premier Healthcare Alliance is a performance improvement alliance comprising approximately 2,400 US hospitals and more than 70,000 other healthcare sites using the power of collaboration to lead the transformation to high-quality, cost-effective care. Owned by hospitals, health systems and other providers, Premier maintains the nation’s most comprehensive repository of clinical, financial and outcomes information and operates a major healthcare purchasing network.

Business need:
Recent research suggests the fragmentation of medical information in the US results in higher medical costs and an increased likelihood of adverse medical events. Premier Healthcare Alliance, an alliance of more than 2,500 US hospitals and 70,000 additional healthcare facilities, wanted to find a way to address these concerns and improve patient outcomes through enhanced data sharing and analytics. Unfortunately, the data needed was stored in many different formats across thousands of locations in the alliance, making inter-organizational access and sharing difficult to achieve.

Solution:
Premier Healthcare Alliance implemented an industry-first technology platform that enables sharing and the performance of highly sophisticated decision-support analytics on data from its thousands of member organizations. The platform greatly enhances the ability of hospitals, doctors and other health providers to collaborate to enhance patient safety while at the same time reducing costs from unnecessary procedures, readmissions, ER visits and hospital-acquired health conditions.

Benefits:
157 participating1 hospitals saved an estimated 23,000 lives and reduced healthcare spending by USD2.85 billion Reduced health spending through the reduction of unnecessary readmissions, ER visits, procedures, and hospital-acquired conditions Improved access to data across the continuum of care helps deliver the promise of Accountable Care Organizations (ACO)

Case Study

Premier Healthcare Alliance is a performance improvement alliance comprising approximately 2,400 US hospitals and more than 70,000 other healthcare sites using the power of collaboration to lead the transformation to high-quality, cost-effective care. Owned by hospitals, health systems and other providers, Premier maintains the nation’s most comprehensive repository of clinical, financial and outcomes information and operates a major healthcare purchasing network.

The Opportunity
Recent research suggests the fragmentation of medical information in the US results in higher medical costs and an increased likelihood of adverse medical events. Premier Healthcare Alliance, an alliance of more than 2,500 US hospitals and 70,000 additional healthcare facilities, wanted to find a way to address these concerns and improve patient outcomes through enhanced data sharing and analytics. Unfortunately, as in most healthcare settings, the data needed to effect these improvements was stored in many different formats across thousands of locations in the alliance, making inter-organizational access and sharing difficult to achieve.

What Makes It Smarter
Doctors need data that’s sharable and easily accessible in real time at the point of care to make the best-informed decisions about how to treat each patient.

Real Business Results

· Reduced health spending through the reduction of unnecessary readmissions, ER visits, procedures, and hospital-acquired conditions
· Improved access to data across the continuum of care helps deliver the promise of Accountable Care Organizations (ACO)
