"We would have had to spend an additional R$2.9 million [US$1.8 million] on new storage-resources on a four-year projection basis without Informix data compression." - Carlos Renato Olivo, IT Manager, Cleartech
IBM Business Partner:
MC Software Ltda
Cleartech saves nearly US$1.8 million when it works with IBM Business Partner MC Software to upgrade to IBM Informix 11.5.
Cleartech has used IBM® Informix® database software since its inception more than a decade ago. In 2010, new client requirements expanded the retention of financial data from one year to five years. This change dramatically increased the amount of data that had to be maintained—from 4 TB to 11 TB—and Cleartech sought to meet this new industry requirement without having to purchase additional storage systems.
Through its use of data compression technology in Informix, Cleartech can successfully maintain five years of data in the co-billing management system on its current storage infrastructure. As an additional benefit, data compression has helped improve database performance, enabling staff to run reports in 30 percent less time and decrease data backup times from 8 hours to 2.5 hours.
§ Avoided nearly US$1.8 million investment in new storage systems § Reduced backup times by 69 percent § Improved database performance to deliver key business reports in 30 percent less time
Since 1999, Cleartech helps Brazilian telecommunications companies manage critical business processes including: revenue cycle management, interconnection billing and consultancy, co-billing management, reconciliation of inter- and intra-carrier systems, inter-carrier exchange of customer billing information, prefix management (numbering plan) and settlement solutions. The company is Brazil’s leading telecom service provider for processing and analyzing call detail records (CDRs). Since 2007, Cleartech has been selected by the Brazilian industry as the Technological Solution for Number Portability.
Cleartech has used IBM® Informix® database software since its inception more than a decade ago. With one of the world’s largest volumes and processing capacities in the telecommunications sector, Cleartech selected IBM Informix for its reliability, performance and scalability. The company processes on average 12 billion CDRs each month with 16 billion CDRs processed during peak periods. “We have used IBM Informix for eleven years and we are very satisfied with the product,” says Carlos Renato Olivo, IT manager for Cleartech.
In 2010, new client requirements expanded the retention of financial data from one year to five years. This change dramatically increased the amount of data that had to be maintained—from 4 TB to 11 TB—and Cleartech sought to meet this new industry requirement without having to purchase additional storage systems.
Working with IBM Business Partner MC Software, Cleartech upgraded to IBM Informix 11.5 for the software’s data compression technology. This storage optimization feature provides full online support for compressing existing table data while applications continue to use the table. Compression is transparent to the applications using the database, helping reduce implementation time and costs as no application changes are required.
“MC Software keeps us very well-informed about Informix and talked to us about how the compression feature could help us meet our goal,” says Olivo. “The compression process was very fast. We were able to reduce our data more than 50 percent in two weeks. Currently our data volume is 2.9 TB. Without storage optimization, we would have had to maintain more than 8 TB of data.”
As a result, Cleartech can successfully maintain five years of data in the co-billing management system on its current storage infrastructure. “We would have had to spend an additional R$2.9 million [US$1.8 million] on new storage resources on a four-year projection basis without Informix data compression,” says Olivo.
As an additional benefit, data compression has helped improve database performance, enabling staff to run business-critical reports in 30 percent less time (from 60 hours to 40 hours) and decrease data backup times by 69 percent (from 8 hours to 2.5 hours). “We had a gain in performance, with our main reports being produced in 30 percent less time than it used to take,” says Olivo.
