Overview
Banco de Crédito del Peru cuts its data management costs in half and improves the performance and reliability of its business applications when it migrates from Oracle Database to IBM DB2.
Business need:
The bank’s distributed business applications, including its SAP and core banking applications, ran on Oracle Database. However, yearly maintenance costs were increasing and BCP needed an alternative platform that would offer high levels of performance and reliability at a lower cost.
Solution:
IBM and IBM Business Partner Synopsis replaced BCP’s Oracle Database with IBM® DB2® 9.7 on an IBM Power® 595 server. IBM first migrated the bank’s SAP applications. Next Synopsis is migrating 23 banking applications, including BCP’s B2B payment system (Web de Letras) and Credipagos, which supports branch banking, home banking and other customer services. The DB2 9.7 compatibility feature enables Synopsis to migrate applications in just a few days.
Benefits:
-- Up to 50 percent savings in data management costs and 45-50 percent savings in storage costs
-- 30 percent improvement in transaction processing efficiency
-- Ability to shift investment to analyzing information to gain new insights into customer service trends in order to better serve clients
Case Study
Banco de Crédito del Peru (BCP) is the largest private bank in Peru with more than 30 percent market share. The bank operates 326 branches, has 15,000 employees and yearly revenue of more than US$1 billion.
Challenge
BCP provides financial services, insurance and securities management to its customers. The bank’s distributed business applications, including its SAP and core banking applications, previously ran on Oracle Database. However, yearly maintenance costs were increasing and BCP needed an alternative platform that would offer high levels of performance and reliability at a lower cost.
Solution
BCP engaged IBM and IBM Business Partner Synopsis to replace its Oracle Database with IBM® DB2® 9.7 database software on an IBM Power® 595 server. According to BCP, this move will help cut its data management costs in half.
IBM helped BCP first migrate its SAP applications (including SAP ERP, SAP Enterprise Portal, SAP Business Warehouse and SAP Solution Manager software). Next, Synopsis is helping BCP migrate 23 custom banking applications. These applications include BCP’s business-to-business payments system (Web de Letras), and Credipagos, which supports branch banking, home banking and other customer services. The company expects to complete the migration process by June 2011.
Using the compatibility feature in DB2 9.7, Synopsis is able to migrate applications from Oracle Database to DB2 database software in just hours for standard applications and in just a few days for the bank’s most complex applications.
Following migration, Synopsis conducted performance testing before placing the new database into production. According to Ricardo Palma, general manager of Synopsis, the switchover for each application migrated has been seamless. “We made the switch for the SAP applications on a Saturday night and it only took a few minutes to turn one environment off and the other on,” says Palma. “The client didn’t experience any downtime. The process was almost instantaneous.”
The bank’s primary reason for migrating was cost. However, BCP executives found following migration of its SAP environment that DB2 also delivered better performance, processing transactions 30 percent more efficiently. Additionally, by leveraging the IBM DB2 storage optimization feature, the company saved 45-50 percent on storage costs. “Our clients are realizing better performance at half the price when they move from Oracle Database to IBM DB2,” says Palma. With these savings, the bank can shift its investment to analyzing information to gain new insights into customer service trends in order to better serve clients.
