Case Study
Challenge
This top US financial holding company acquired the banking operations of another US bank through an FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) assisted deal. This was the holding company’s largest acquisition and to meet FDIC requirements, which included an aggressive timeline, the company had to not only archive 10 years of the bank’s Electronically Stored Information (ESI)—totaling more than 35 terabytes (TB) of unstructured and structured data—but also confirm this task was completed quickly and efficiently and in compliance with FDIC regulations.
Solution
Given the project’s complexity and the FDIC deadline looming, this financial holding company chose IBM due to its vast resources, product knowledge, comprehensive Smart Archive Strategy solution and ability to deliver a total solution within the tight timeframe. The company financed all the hardware, software and services through IBM Global Financing. This minimized the upfront capital outlay and preserved the bank’s cash flow and lines of credit for other strategic business needs.
IBM’s Smart Archive Strategy solution, which unites IBM® Software, systems and services into a powerful platform, enabled the financial holding company to collect and centralize the acquired bank’s data while adhering to an aggressive deadline to vacate the bank’s facility. The solution also provides a platform to support future electronic discovery and records management requirements for archived information as part of the organization’s information governance and compliance initiatives.
Working with IBM, the company successfully migrated 35 TB of critical data and 200 million objects spread across Microsoft® Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint® and file systems. The bank also archived content from about 6,000 desktops and laptops, 350 servers and 2.7 TB of emails stored in .pst files. Fifty five applications in two data centers were retired and validated within nine weeks.
