" InfoSphere DataStage provides the features we need to save time, effort and money." - Amr Halawa, Manager, Architecture and Data Quality, Etisalat Egypt
With InfoSphere DataStage, the Etisalat Egypt data quality team has been able to meet its service level agreements (SLAs) and deliver up-to-date information to business users daily.
Data warehouses provide a single trusted source for information for corporations. But for data quality and integration teams, loading data from dozens or hundreds of source systems throughout the enterprise into the data warehouse can be challenging. At Etisalat, this process had to be completed between midnight and 8 a.m. every day so business reports would have the most current information.
With more than 50 million call detail records processed daily, Etisalat uses IBM® InfoSphere™ DataStage® to extract, transform and load data from numerous source systems into its data warehouse. Because InfoSphere DataStage enables the team to complete ETL processes by 6 a.m., two hours ahead of schedule each day, the team can also run health checks to confirm data quality.
§ Helps data quality team meet SLAs and deliver up-to-date information to business users daily § Saves time and money in data integration processes § Provides trusted source for information to improve decision making
Etisalat Egypt is part of Etisalat, one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world and the leading operator in the Middle East and Africa. Etisalat Egypt provides fixed-line and mobile phone service and a host of 3G offerings, including video calling, mobile TV, mobile broadband Internet and data services. The company’s network serves 96 percent of the population in Egypt.
The value of a data warehouse is that it provides a single trusted source for information. But for data quality and integration teams, loading data from dozens or hundreds of source systems throughout the enterprise into the data warehouse can be challenging. At Etisalat Egypt, this process had to be completed between midnight and 8 a.m. every day so business reports would have the most current financial and customer data. “It’s very critical to have correct and current data in our data warehouse,” says Amr Halawa, manager, Architecture and Data Quality, Etisalat Egypt. “Business decisions are made based on this data so the quality of the data is very, very, very critical for us.”
With more than 50 million call detail records processed daily, Etisalat Egypt uses IBM® InfoSphere™ DataStage®, an IBM InfoSphere Information Server module, to move data from numerous source systems into its data warehouse. Currently, extract, transform and load (ETL) processes are performed nightly. The team plans to transition to real-time data integration using InfoSphere DataStage in the near future. Because InfoSphere DataStage enables the team to complete ETL processes by 6 a.m., two hours ahead of schedule each day, the staff has time to run health checks to confirm data quality.
InfoSphere DataStage was selected based on the team’s previous experience with the product. The implementation included an analysis of user requirements, the mapping of source and target systems and finally designing the actual ETL jobs. The entire process took only six months and the software has been in production for more than two years. “We used DataStage from day one to perform ETL on our data warehouse,” says Waleed Mamdouh, manager, Data Integration, Etisalat Egypt. “We had worked with DataStage for six or seven years at another company and knew it would meet our needs. DataStage has a user-friendly interface, is easy for developers to learn and use, and it has the power to process many millions of transactions in a very small timeframe and the scalability to support our increasing data volumes.”
With InfoSphere DataStage, the data quality team has been able to meet its service level agreements (SLAs) and deliver up-to-date information to business users daily. “Being able to refresh the data by 8 a.m. provides an important benefit for our company,” says Halawa. “There’s no lost time and business users have the most current data to make informed decisions each day.”
And for the data quality and integration teams, the software enables greater efficiency. “InfoSphere DataStage provides the features we need to save time, effort and money,” adds Mamdouh.
