Case Study

Company Overview

Implanet is a European medical device company headquartered in Bordeaux, France.

Challenge
Implanet needed to offer a solution that could ensure the traceability of patient implants throughout all points in the supply chain, from manufacturer to distribution to hospital to patient—helping to ensure patient safety and maximizing efficiency. With the existing solution, manufacturers and hospitals were allocating a great deal of time and resources to identify and locate devices—resulting in increased costs and the risk of human error. Implanet saw an opportunity to create a new business model using traceable implants with intelligent RFID tags to offer socially and economically responsible solutions for the entire healthcare community.

With the new innovative technology in place, Implanet can provide a highly automated system for tracking high-quality surgical implants with full visibility of product information and inventory online, reducing inefficiencies throughout the entire supply chain.

Solution
The new proprietary technology, BeepNTrack, was developed by Implanet with the help of IBM InfoSphere Traceability Server and IBM RFID Solution for Pharmaceutical track and trace technology. IBM was able to provide Implanet with the global, durable solution that offers an on demand portal where information is secure and easily accessible for all stakeholders.

Details of the solution include:

  • Automated supply chain and productivity gains
  • Complete medical device traceability from raw material manufacturer to distribution to hospital to patient and vice versa
  • Patient data confidentiality
  • Information archiving of patient and product data

Benefits
BeepNTrack benefits for manufacturers include:
  • Ability to immediately identify product lots and patients in case of implant recall.
  • Automated online order processing, reducing human error and optimizing resources necessary to improve the supply chain process.
  • Helps eliminate counterfeiting risks with medical device authentication and distribution network integrity for healthcare professionals.
  • Enables medical professionals to have access to the right medical device at the right place and the right time.
  • Hospitals can set up automatic stock adjustments, reducing administration time and costly inefficiencies.
  • Each implant has a unique device identification number so information can be collected, analyzed and distributed on demand to meet specific stakeholder needs.
