Part of The Priceline Group, priceline.com provides online travel services, hotel rooms, airline tickets, car rentals, vacation packages and cruises.

The need

In 2009, Rambabu Vallabhajosula, vice president of ERP Systems for priceline.com, and his team projected a high rate of data growth—100 - 200 percent annually—for the company’s Oracle E-Business Suite environment. This environment supports priceline.com’s financial transactions—everything from accounts payable and receivables, to general ledger and invoices. Left unchecked, this data growth would slow application performance and threaten service level agreements (SLAs).

“Our search for an archiving solution was proactive,” says Vallabhajosula. “We knew as time progressed, it would be difficult for us to meet SLAs as our production data increased.”

The solution

Working with IBM and IBM Business Partner, Estuate, priceline.com manages this data growth efficiently and maintains high application performance—all while giving business users seamless access to archived data as needed for information governance and reporting requirements.

“IBM® InfoSphere® Optim™ Data Growth Solution for Oracle E-Business Suite provides our users with access to 100 percent of data in production or archive environments, based on their responsibility,” Vallabhajosula says. “We archive data from production into the archive files and save it to a ‘production-like’ archive database. It’s all integrated in Oracle E-Business Suite, easy to manage and works very well.”

This work is critical to meet SLAs. Credit card settlements must be submitted by 9:00 p.m. daily to confirm timely payment to all parties. And all data must be loaded into the ERP system by 7:00 a.m. for financial planning and forecasting. Given that each online transaction can consist of multiple parts—a charge to a consumer’s credit card, a payment to a vendor, and a payment to a priceline.com affiliate website—100,000 - 500,000 new invoices are added to the ERP system daily.

“InfoSphere Optim Data Growth Solution helps me to meet our SLAs,” Vallabhajosula says. “If I hadn’t archived, application performance would be much worse.”

Less data in its production Oracle ERP database has also helped priceline.com to achieve the following:
● Manage continued data growth and stabilize the database environment at a manageable size
● Reduce the time required to backup and recover its Oracle ERP database in case of a disaster
● Retain data for legal requirements for up to 21 years without impacting application performance

The benefit
● Estimates disk savings of 5.4 TB by the end of 2013 and 7.2 TB by the end of 2014 for reduced storage costs and improved application performance
● Delivers 100 percent data access to support business and compliance requirements while reducing the size of its Oracle ERP database
● Enables team to continue to meet SLAs and accelerates backup and recovery processes despite 100 - 200 percent annual data growth
